  1. The clock in the tower was known locally as 'Freda'. Sorry, but I don't know why.
  2. Sorry Anna, the village green disappeared many many years ago. It now belongs to a local haulage contractor, who parks all his lorries on there. However he does the maintain the parking area very well indeed. Ecclesfield is still classed as a village by the locals, especially those born and bred here. It has all the clubs and organisations expected from village life. I am interested about the future of The Ball Inn, as the area is a conservation 2 site. We shall just have to wait and see.
  3. If it's Ecclesfield, nobody seems to know. We were not given any advance warning about the closure. Now all traffic is diverted to the road where I live. It's horrendous. The road is extremely busy, without adding more traffic to it. It's a waiting game if you are trying to get on to the road in a car. I have left mine in its parking area until the all clear is sounded.
  4. The film was made in 1957, and is very good. As you say, Alec Guinness is brilliant in it.
  5. I went to school in Ecclesfield with an Audrey Humberstone. This would be 1951/9. I think she lived in the Strawberry/Tunwell area. ---------- Post added 19-04-2016 at 20:15 ---------- Len, were you ever a postman in Sheffield (Lane Top)?
  6. The car dealers on the way to Chapeltown are The Ecclesfield Motor Company. They occupied the site that is now Rysar Motors for many years. I bought two cars from them. Rysar are now trading from a portacabin on the site. It looks like there is something wrong with the building. This building was built in the early 1960's, opening as as The Fitzwilliam Motor Company. There were several garages on the site before that.
  7. People living in Ecclesfield watch your cars. There are three hooded youths (one on a cycle) going around throwing eggs at cars. When I approached them they brazenly said they hadn't done it, but someone had seen them, and I think taken a photo with a mobile phone.
  8. My Dad got our first television for the Coronation in 1953, as my Mother went on and on about getting one. A 12" black and white one. Our living room was full of people on 2 June 1953. The TV was like something magic.
  9. There may well be a telephone number on the side of the lorries. If there is, you can go to the fountain head.
  10. Can anyone help me please? I have a difference of opinion with a friend. He insists there were two cinemas in Firth Park. I say there was only one - the lovely Paragon. Which of us is right please? Thank you.
  11. I remember Terry Steeples when he was the manager of the Essoldo Cinema in Rotherham. This would be in 1961. His wife was a real good looker.
  12. Can someone advise me on car parking near Sheffield Town Hall this coming Sunday? I always use public transport to get to Sheffield centre, and have no knowledge of parking a car there. My nephew is taking his young children to see the Coca Cola Christmas lorry, which he tells me, will be parked outside the Town Hall on Sunday. He will be travelling from Barnsley during mid afternoon. Can anyone advise please. I know there are various threads about City centre parking, but some are really old and things change so quickly. Thank you in anticipation.
  13. Yes they do. A young lady called on me last year. She was from St Luke's, wanting people to join their lottery. I did join and received a letter from the hospice thanking me for joining.
  14. I worked for the GPO/Royal Mail for 45 years and helped devise Postcodes. If my memory serves me well, I think the Sheffield Postcode system was introduced in 1968.
  15. Can you clear your PM box as I have sent you a message. Thanks.
  16. I used to know the area well and worked with a lady who lived in Glasshouse Street.
  17. I second that as I did my late Father's. No problem whatsoever.
  18. I worked in there before I retired. It's like a rabbit warren inside. There are two floors below Fitzalan Square level.
  19. Buy some proper button thread and have a go yourself. It really is a strong thread.
  20. I totally agree. Also the Gaumont - the 'Regent' one, not the ugly Odeon they built in its place.
