  1. I had the same call just before Christmas. I told her to shove it.
  2. Many years ago I worked with Joe Weston who lived on Long Henry Row. A really nice man with a wonderful sense of humour.
  3. Years ago someone told me she had seen 'a white lady' in the grange, in spirit form. Did anyone else see her, or was my friend having me on?.
  4. I seem to remember the YEB offices being in Change Alley. Am I right?
  5. Jim is correct. It was Hunshelf which is between Ecclesfield and Chapeltown. We lived just below it on The Common at Ecclesfield, near the old cinema. My parents told me that one night one of the 'shells' hit our back door and took it straight off its hinges. My cousin managed the cinema, and each time there was a raid in progress, he flashed a message on the screen saying there was a raid on. For those who wished to stay, the programme would continue. On one of the blitz nights films were shown until 7am. This would have been the Thursday night as the cinema did not open on Sundays.
  6. It was actually filmed in Grimethorpe, Barnsley. They used my friends house. She was a little put off when she saw what they had done to it, but they left it immaculate. She said Ewan McGregor and Tara Fitzgerald were non approachable but the rest of the cast were lovely, especially Sue Johnstone and Pete Postlethwaite.
  7. I went to Chapeltown from Ecclesfield this afternoon. Just before Crakehall Road, the 40 sign is still there, then a couple of hundred yards further on the 30 sign appears.
  8. Sheffield Assay Office may be able to help. Just a thought. Whoops, sorry I didn't see at first that you have been given advice regarding the Assay Office. Apologies.
  9. This week I bought some small pebbles from Wentworth Sawmills (in Wentworth of course). Quite a large bag for £1.99, but I don't know if they deliver. Give them a ring and ask. I am in S35 too, so Wentworth is quite near and they may deliver to you. Their telephone number is 01226 742206. It's worth a try.
  10. My late cousin Jack worked for Essoldo at all three Sheffield sites. He gave me ESther years ago. Evidently Mr Sheckman was a bit of a stickler.
  11. That's what the Barnsley Chronicle does. Are rules different for weekly newspapers?
  12. Next time tell them that at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask
  13. The cinema started its life as The Capitol in 1939. It had only been open a couple of weeks or so when the government closed all cinemas and theatres because of the start of the second world war. Essoldo bought The Capitol. The Forum and Ecclesfield Cinema House from Gleesons around 1948, who would only sell all three as a package, or none at all.
  14. In August 1999 my Father was admitted to the NGH to have a pacemaker fitted. During the operation the surgeon cut into his left lung. I was told Father would recover and he would be discharged the day after. I was told he would be able to walk unsupported within a week, and I would notice a big difference in him. I certainly did, especially when he died four days later. Before we left the hospital I asked the male nurse on duty if Father would have to come back for a check up. A very rude female member of staff butted in and said to me 'You have been told he will recover, so don't ask questions.' I still remember her face. I was a good match for her manners. I don't know her rank as she did not wear a uniform. She then started to tell a nurse what to do next, then went into the office and sat down.
  15. Barnsley Hospital has to be the worst in the county. A friend walked in there unaided and came out in a coffin. This was last year.
  16. When I was a postman I had to clear the posting box outside Parson Cross post office. I opened the door and let the grid/chute down. Staring at me was a little frog. I picked it up and put it down around around the back of a building from where it hopped merrily away. That would have been in 1973. It seems as if things have not changed so much.
  17. Sorry, but I can only tell you what Aldi told me. Do you know which Aldi stores have them please?
  18. To return to the original posting. I spoke to a member of staff at Ecclesfield Aldi yesterday. He said Aldi do not employ security guards, and he believed that is the reason the store attracts shoplifters.
  19. When they were actually in Ecclesfield, I bought two cars from them. I had no trouble at all with either of them. However, when I got the second car home (just around the corner from Ecc M C), it ran out of petrol. I only drove it a few hundred yards. Make sure the one you like has petrol in in it. At least enough to get you to a garage. That particular car was hit five times, and each time it was parked correctly with other cars. Thankfully I was not inside it each time it was hit. The last time was by a bus, who sent it to the scrap yard. Nothing to do with ECC MC though.
  20. I think you are right. I live two minutes walk from Ecclesfield Aldi. I have been there many times, but not once have I seen a security guard.
