  1. Could anyone please tell me what colour Henry Boot lorries were in the 1960's.If anyone could put a photo on, that would be great.
  2. Who are you ? I may be able to pass a message on for you .
  3. Saddened, disgusted, upset. No steel, no coal. Our forebears must be spinning in their graves.
  4. Well, turn that on it's head, and it's like saying why even bother liking celebrities, music stars, whoever. We don't stop liking them just cos we don't know them personally.Have you never been to a gig and felt the sheer joy of being with a band or singer that you absolutely adore or who moves you from laughter to tears and back again ? Someone who has provided the musical score for the film that is your life ? I feel very sorry for anyone who doesn't 'Get it'
  5. Hope everything has gone well for you this weekend.Hope you don't get too melancholy looking at the old places. I've been looking at loads of old pics of Sheffield lately and feel real warmth towards them, but at the time, we probably both bemoaned the place ! Nostalgia...edgy and dangerous !! xx
  6. I'm so happy and sad at the same time to learn that Bowie was to be a Grandad. I'm glad he knew.
  7. While the artist may be good at painting, that is not the Bowie I loved since I was twelve. Maybe he would have been better painting an album cover or something, like say from Diamond dogs.Faces are notoriously hard to paint, on an uneven surface I guess it would be very difficult. I just wish he hadn't done it, it makes me feel cross and sad, and I'm sure that's not the reaction he aimed for.
  8. Players no 6 then Embassy Regal, then B and H. Thankfully that is where I stopped !
  9. The Nelson , just off the top of the moor, when I was 14 ! I looked a lot older.
  10. I bought my first Bowie album when I was twelve.I have been a fan all my adult life.I was priviliged to be a fan, and now I'm crying like I am still twelve. Love to all my Sheffield Bowie brothers and sisters out there who used to frequent the Daizy and Limit, it really was quite something. xx
  11. Thanks blackhill , I find it weird that just one of the siblings was singled out for the cathedral as in your family the same as mine. Thanks CarolW , that certainly could be an explanation. I emailed the Cathedral but it's now the Diocesan records office at Shoreham street that deals with such things, so the next step is to contact them !
  12. Thank you for all replies so far.. Thanks Hillsboro, good to see you again ! I am not on SF too much but I do keep popping in to see what's happening. Duffems..Thanks, your story is similar with one exception..the siblings were NOT baptised at the Cathedral, only the middle child was ! Weirdly . lottiecass..Yes, all very strange !
  13. Are there any local history buffs who can help me with a little puzzle ? Does Hillsboro still post? Wondering if he will know ? Anyway, here's the thing.. Firstly, how would I get info as to a baptism at Sheffield Cathedral in the 1930's., do they have records of who God parents were for instance? The second part of the puzzle is: What would be the reasoning behind a child being baptized at the Cathedral when the parents were neither High Church or lived in the vicinity, a child whose siblings were baptized at small local churches? A child who was in a poorer part of Sheffield at the time? Could it have been a mass baptism for some reason ? It's just a family mystery and so out of character for a normal working class family in those days. Any thoughts ? ..Sensible answers only please !!
  14. Oh sorry, yeah you must be an old fart, ..with Bad eyesight...I am not a mister !!!
  15. Are any of these people or are you Jayne Brookfield , Bowie fan ?
  16. Well said Joe Momma and Tinkerbell 65, and by the way Jakeanthill, if us old farts hadn't led the way, you wouldn't be listening to anything near as good as the music you listen to now !!
  17. Yes, I remember a speedway 'Wall of death' there as well, in fact me and my sister were only talking about that the other day ! It seemed to be THE place to visit if you grew up in the sixties.Omg, I had forgotten about the booth where you could make your own record, I dearly wanted to do that, but wasn't allowed. I pestered for HOURS !!!
  18. Does anyone have any photos of JM Roper lorries..scrap yard that used to be in Brightside Lane, late sixties to late seventies ?
  19. I am trying to get spoons with names on for my Grandaughters. You have to collect a code which is printed in pink ink inside the packet on the cardboard. You need three for each spoon. Someone brought me one of those large boxes of cornflakes and made a mistake as it didn't have the offer on it. So now I'm stuck with tons of cornflakes, but not enough codes to get the spoons. So, if anyone has any codes they are not using, I'd be very grateful if they could PM them to me.Thanks for reading this. ---------- Post added 23-01-2015 at 19:20 ---------- Just bumping this request again , can anyone help please ?
  20. Oh My God, I have not been on the forum for a while and was just rechecking this post..Dingo has died ? I'm so shocked and saddened. Daisy I can't believe it, another piece of our youth gone eh ?
  21. I was watching this too, I remember that the curtains closed on him and we thought he'd come stumbling back on any second, it seemed an age before there was an announcement, and even when there was it seemed as though it was a joke and he was gonna burst through the curtains and do his trademark laugh. It was quite shocking really. Incidentally if anyone is interested, there is a portrayal of him on over Easter, played by David Threlfall who is padded out and forced to wear size 14 shoes to look like him. It'c alled 'Tommy' and is on Easter Monday I think.
  22. watching old gigs on sky arts , pistols, banshees, doors, stones etc etc !
  23. Yes I was glued to it every week, and then again when they re ran it in either the eighties or nineties !! However, maybe we should blame it for all this reality rubbish that's on now, but back then we'd never seen anything like it ! ---------- Post added 17-04-2014 at 19:30 ---------- I do remember Sylvania waters, I was quite annoyed when they stopped it as you wondered what had happened to the families featured, I remember there was a Mother and father who were rich and had a boat etc, and they had a son who was skint, he married a girl and they had a baby and lived at the other end of the scale from these rich parents !
