  1. Reminds me of the shoes my bride to be bought from the Saxone shoe shop on High Street in the nineteen sixties. She bought the shoes for our wedding, and it turned out that the leather inside the heel had some rough edges, and her nylons would develop ladders every time she wore these shoes. We went back to the shop two or three times, and all they did was take a file to the heel grip, buff it a little and send us on our way. The problem persisted, and it became very costly in new nylon stockings each time she wore them. One day, as this problem occurred as we travelling into town, we decided to go to Saxone and show them. As we were now running out of patience with the sales staff, we asked to see the store manager. After a lengthy wait, he came from the back of the store and asked whet was the problem. My wife removed the offending shoe, and sure enough, there, attached to the inside shoe heel, was a thread still connected to the nylon stocking. The manager swiftly, and without batting an eye, broke the thread, and said, I can not see what your problem is. And that was it. In those days, being fairly young and innocent, we left it at that. Not so now, it would take more than a mere store manager to intimidate me, and, he would run for cover if he was confronted by she who must be obeyed. By the way, a letter to the company head office brought no response at all.
  2. Must have had a very sheltered childhood. Worst sin I ever committed was, along with a bunch of mates on holiday in Skegness, filling the holes on a crazy golf course with sand.

  4. Imagine they are named that because they sort of resemble a piece of cheese cut in the traditional way, off a round.
  5. These types of houses only appeared at the ends of a road if I remember correctly.
  6. My particular tormentor changed from bully to buddy after I had taken it for so long. One day I stood up to him and that was it. Best friends after that.
  7. Just been talking to our 14 year old granddaughter. She's off on a cruise on Thursday. As this is her birthday, today she's going to a salon to get her nails done . Going out for dinner to an expensive restaurant with her parents this evening. She has a new I-pad for her b/day present. Last year their holiday was a couple of weeks in Hawaii, and they just bought a new RAV4 car. A night at the pictures once a week was a real treat, we thought ourselves lucky to go to Cleethorpes for a day, and our annual holiday was a week in a rented caravan in Skeggy. A fabulous present at 14 would have been a 45 record of Elvis, or one of the other pop singers of the 50's. However no-one ever said they were bored, tried to keep up with the Jones's or the latest fashion trends, and only a few were lucky enough to have a car of any kind. An old Wigfalls gaspipe bike, or the public transport system was my mode of transport, never once feeling badly done to. Better off these days? I doubt it.
  8. I went to nursery school which was in the old Burdall's building. This was in the 40's though. Don't remember much about it, except it seems to me the location was just to the left of the main entrance.
  9. Didn't someone also call on neighbours on the street for cash donations to help with the funeral costs?
  10. Didn't they also put a white sheet up to the windows?
  11. I see Jean Peirrus (Peerus?) died a few days ago.
  12. I worked there for a couple of years in the mid 60's, at the same time he opened the shop on Ecclesall Rd. When the property on Alderson Rd. was demolished, he opened a small place on London Rd. just above the Locarno. When I knew I was leaving to go elsewhere, I gave him a month's notice thinking I was being fair to him, and giving him lots of time to find a replacement. He immediately laid me off. Nice guy.
  13. They were agents for Vespa scooters, I bought one there in 1958.
  14. I was born in the early 40's and remember the lamplighter lighting the one outside our house at the top of Daniel Hill St. He didn't actually light the thing as such, but pulled down on a pivoted lever, which had a round hole at either end, to light it, and then in the morning would pull the other side to shut it off.
  15. And, perhaps the rear seats fold down to give access into the boot.
  16. I remember having to do this on my scooter. Sillyness. The alternative was to leave the sidelights on. But with the batteries then, this was good for about 20 minutes before the battery was flat.
  17. I believe it was made originally by a U.S. group called, Sons of the Pioneers.
  18. Ann Shelton used "Red Sails In The Sunset" as her signature tune, but didn't know she was a comedienne.
  19. How about the Scootacar. There was a dealer on Penistone Rd. by Hillfoot Bridge.
  20. I knew Joe in the early 60's. He had a photographic studio in space rented at the old Hillsborough Park Cinema. I went to watch him, and learned a heck of a lot about portrait photography. He lived in the Nether Edge area. A nice guy, but just a little flaky.
