  1. Hillfoot Working Mens Club, went on a couple of kids trips to Cleethorpes with them. Situated in amongst the advertising billboards and pidgeon coops.
  2. had a celebration with all my work mates at the Vine on Cemetery Rd. We had a shut in after closing time. The cops came and rousted us, nothing illegal going on, but sure put a dent in the festivities. Thanks guys!
  3. I used this one. On the way to and from school, we used to nip over the fences to nick veggies out of the gardens. Rotten lot we were. I also remember there was a greenhouse in which they grew tomatoes, had never seen them grown outdoors before.
  4. Going back to the 50's, Senior, and Roebuck were there then, along with Miss`s Peerus, Raynor and Smith, and Miss Dewsnap, headteacher. Others I can`t remember though.
  5. We lived at number 3, a large stone faced building at the top of Bloor St. opposite the Blake Pub. Originally the house was home to the Walkley Liberal Club and was split into two residences in the 1930's. Durning the war, our mum worked at Whitehouses beer off at the top of Blake St. During the war there was a static water reservoir, built at the bottom of the street on a site where a number of houses had been bombed. I remember Tysons, a tobacconists, a chip shop run by the Glossop family, these were at the top end of Daniel Hill St., and the Priors, my aunt and uncle, who ran a wallpaper shop at number 2 Walkley St. My brother, sister and I went to Upperthorpe school. We left the area in 1948. Don't suppose anyone has photo's of this area, I've seen the one on Picture Sheffield, but that seems about it.
  6. Whitehall 1212 was, I believe the number for New Scotland Yard.
  7. Looking again at the picture with the bus, on the left hand side towards the top, there is what could be a street name plate. Can this be enhanced from the negative?
  8. Don't forget 'Bunney's the trendiest shop in town in the '50's
  9. Have we considered the fact it might not be in Sheffield, perhaps Barnsley or Rotherham for instance. The bus could have been hired to transport guests from Sheffield to another town. What's with the case of empties in front? Beer, perhaps to keep everyone happy during the journey.
  10. They didn't change things, at least not this time. The Unity was to the left of the top of Wood St. There was a dance school above it, and Wood St. did end at Langsett Rd.
  11. I have maps dating back to the 1920's, but can find no reference to Strand St. Any better idea where it was.?
  12. I lived in the area of Daniel Hill, Bloor, and Blake streets. This is kind of halfway Upperthorpe and Walkley and can't see any threads relating to it. Went to Upperthorpe school, but my folks always talked of living in Walkley. Anyone have any ideas?
  13. Went to Southey Juniors with Linda Savage, they lived on Southey Hill.
  14. Oops, sorry, that was a bus and not a tram. Trams didn't go to NPX.
  15. Reminds me of a book I took out of Walkley library many years ago. We had a new puppy, which whilst we were out one night, chewed the cover off the book. I had to sheepishly go to the library with the damaged book, and pay a fine, although it was not full replacement cost. The name of the book, 'How to Train Your Puppy'!!!
  16. I lived in the New Parson Cross area, and went to Marlcliffe school. As the school is in a different district to home, I had to travel by bus to the Wednesday ground and walk the rest of the way. The same thing in reverse to get home again Twice a year, my folks had to claim back the money spent on bus fares. There was one conductress, I always hoped to travel with, as she always told me to put my bus fare away and let me travel free, which meant I could buy sweets at our local post office. Don't remember ever being asked to show my ticket by an inspector.
  17. We had the same type of discount ticket at Marlcliffe, I know my pals from Colley also had them. All we had to do was ask for them. Must have been City wide.
  18. She definitely lived on South Road, very close to the Walkley Paladium. I was invited to visit after I left Southey Green. If memory serves, she had sisters living there at the same time.
  19. I left Southey Juniors in 1953. Made a visit a couple of years later, she was still teaching there then.
  20. I went to Southey Green Juniors, there we had a teacher named Jean Peerus (Peirus? ) wonder if it's the same one. However,if it was, I found none of this aggression, only a lovely art teacher who seemed to be pleasant with all her students.
  21. That's the one, only it should have said Langsett Road, not Avenue.
  22. My first single goes a little further back. In the mid 50's- 'This Old House' by Rosemary Clooney This was a 78rpm, purchased at Cann's on Dixon Lane. My first L.P. was Buddy Holley, purchased just after he died. in '58, bought this one at Spooners on Langsett Ave.
