My family moved on to Derwent Row when I was 6 in 1964. We had a 3 bedroom flat. There was presumably no gas because the heating was from the incinerator at Bernard Road I think so no need for gas central heating. Tv was connected to British Relay so we used to get local programming. I also remember the electric milk floats that used to access the veranda's via the service lifts.

Bessemar/Fountain/Pig and Whistle pub, Leopold street
Veritas replied to vikki's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Laskeys I think was the shop. I remember buying my first TV from there in 1982 Hitachi 22" at a cost of £329 which unbelievably now is £1100 plus. At some point it was also a post office -
Been a couple of times as well as NYE food very good

Zizi's and Strada in Leopold Square both usually have plenty of deals/vouchers on offer and can work out quite cheap . All Bar One have Tapas Tuesday's which is a great deal with a bottle of wine and 4 small plates for £20

That's correct and they also owned the Howard -
County Hotel, 70 Howard Street.

It did have a Bar. I think it wad actually owned by the same people as The Howard Hotel. I remember my friends coming down from Glasgow and staying the night there in 1980. 1 also remember having an interview there the following year for a managerial position with Stanley Racing, got the job offer but did not fancy the 6 weeks training in Liverpool ( I would have jumped at the chance if The Liverpool today had been the same 35 years ago -
Talking to an actual Tax Inspector, At the old Sheffield Tax Districts 1-6 ?. How very 1985 ish

Went to the Urban 1/4 on Sharrowvale Road the other week and was most impressed with the Burger. In fact the best one I have had since going to The Almost Famous in Manchester before the fire a few years ago.

I would have thought I went in VAT1 about 1978-1980 not sure how long it was before it became Bartons. Think it was 1980 when I started frequenting Mr Kites more regularaly

I remember going to The Voctoria Wine Bar for a birthday dinner 28 years ago and also for a drink on other occasions. It was indeed a bit on the upmarket pricier side. It was owned I think by Johnny Falsone who laso owned Giovanni's further down the road opposite the nursery. Menzel's when Michael originally opened it was a great place with good wine and food unfortunately he overspent on the place and was always struggling due to the pressure from his bankers. I thought La Scala was just a local Italian restaurant although I only ever went there once. I also thought Trippet's in its original incarnation was good and enjoyed many a Friday lunch in there when it was usually very busy mainly due to one of the local barristers chambers. I also used the Crush Bar in The Lyceum on a Friday lunch when it first reopened with Champagne & Oysters being promoted Funny enough I had a conversation last week about the original Sheffield wine bars VAT 1 and Mr Kites and how our palates have changed from the early days of drinking Bulls Blood and Tiger Milk

To be fair to him I went to his old place on Piccadilly in The Oak Room for lunch when he was still cooking there and had 3 Michelin stars and it still ranks as the best meal I have had in this country and exceptional value at the time as well. Been a couple of times to The West Bar one for lunch (with a voucher) as it is close to the office and can't say I had any complaints and the food ranked on a par with the likes of AB1 and Browns which I appreciate is not much of a yardstick. As there is another voucher offer on this month I will probably give it another go ---------- Post added 15-10-2015 at 14:21 ---------- Been for lunch today. 2 Burgers with chips a bottle of Moretti and a Coke for just over £20 with the voucher. The Burger was very good (almost as good as the one I had last week at the new Urban Quarter on Sharrowvale Road). The Chips (Not Fries) were also excellent. Quite busy this lunch as well with a few having afternoon tea. Will probably go back next week as with the voucher it was excellent value

Today's nightclubs compared to the 70s
Veritas replied to Cycleracer's topic in Going out in Sheffield
In 1974-1977 (between the ages of 16-19) I don't remember any of the nightclubs being cool. Sams was the first nightclub I went in following its recent change from The Heartbeat and because we lived on The Valley it was the most convenient. Steeley's was the most popular nightclub in Sheffield at the time regularly being full on a Saturday night with 2000 people in, Baileys, Scamps and The Genevieve never really did it for me although we did go to the latter occasionally. Josephine's opened in this period but with it's renowned strict door policy we thought we would be wasting our time trying to breach it ( I did not take permanent residency there until my mid 20's through until it closed and became Banus). Turn ups and Fanny's meant cars and none of us drove. The only other club we frequented was if in rock mode Wap first then Penthouse. As for Daizy Monday nights was Northern Soul and Wednesday for Bowie/Roxy -
Pub lunch on a Sunday, somewhere towards the south west of city
Veritas replied to medusa's topic in Going out in Sheffield
Went to Brocco for Sunday lunch a few weeks a go and was very impressed. There is one roast of the day, a fish of the day and a vegetarian dish on the specials as well as the normal A La Carte Menu. I also believe the bus from/ to Dore stops outside The Brocco -
Today's nightclubs compared to the 70s
Veritas replied to Cycleracer's topic in Going out in Sheffield
Must have been a different Crazy Daizy to the one I went in. We went in as a group of single 18 year old lads regularly on a Saturday afternoon and Monday night and occasionally on a Friday night or as a Saturday night alternative to Samantha's/ Steeley's without any issues -
Only one I can think off was the Sicey Hotel (not that I ate there) was this not a Beefeater place ?

Attendance at the wednesday bristol game
Veritas replied to pathebladela's topic in Sheffield Football
In 2016/17 it is apparently a staggering £99 million to the bottom club with the champions earning £150 million. The problem is it will no doubt just end up getting paid out in even more ridiculous wages -
Agreed I tip 10% here although in London they tend to add 10/12.5% to the bill so as long as the service is OK no complaints, however in Italy where I spend much of my time there is a no tipping culture so maybe round up to nearest 5.00 euro i.e 37 to 40. In the US the full 15% or prepare to fight your way out of the restaurant

I am not quite sure about that, the year in the premiership resulted in an actual proper trading profit. It was the money thrown at the payroll costs in the subsequent attempt to get back in to the premiership that was the problem. When you are in the premiership gate money is not overly important in the scheme of things as the massive amount of money from Sky meant that even Blackpool with their low level of gate money could profit from it. If tickets had been increased by 20% then it would have probably meant another £1- £1.5M in income which was much less than Mr Warnock wasted on Shelton & Fathi -
2 years left on his contract at Liverpool. I would think his wage of £125k a week may prove a stumbling block unless Liverpool where willing to contribute £100k per week of this. Who knows though Leeds used to pay £60k per week for the pleasure of Robbie Fowler extending his property portfolio while playing for Man City

Apparently born in Angola but you would think he would now be a Portugese citizen and therefore an EC Citizen so would he still need. Clearance ?
