  1. Didn't most of the Wimpey' become Burger Kings ? I wouldn't have thought rusty trowels were hygienic. For flipping burgers
  2. Chris Guthrie , £100k was a decent fee at the time . Apparently when we signed him he was pregnant with goals just didn't deliver any for us
  3. I think that description of TC is a little bit disingenuous. He was signed at 18 in the year United got relegated to Div 2. He was instrumental in them getting promotion at the 3rd attempt back to Div 1 while still only 21 and then spent the next 8 seasons playing in Division 1 at United and then Leeds resulting in him being capped by England before moving to QPR were unfortunately due to injury his playing time was limited resulting in an early end to his career ---------- Post added 19-01-2015 at 21:07 ---------- My late Sheffield Wednesday supporting father considered Jimmy Hagen to be the best footballer he had seen play for a Sheffield team with Jackie Robinson being being his best ever player for Wednesday and Duncan Edwards his best ever player. ---------- Post added 19-01-2015 at 21:08 ---------- I thought most people were suggesting he was Aaron
  4. Actually I thought one of your fellow Owl posters was alluding to the fact that the support was crap for cup games but ignored the good attendances in the league which one is it. I also assume if our league attendances are crap following that logic so are yours. As for stadia if there is only a 5K differential in capacity and ours is small I assume yours is small to medium
  5. Can't believe we have had 28 managers since I have been going to the Lane although that includes 8 acting. So I will skip over a few The first and best was in my opinion John Harris Ken Furphy was a mixed bag gave me my best and United's best season in my time watching in 73/74 but undid it all with relegation the following year. Jimmy Sirrel nothing positive to say really gave me my worst day watching United relegated to 3rd at Cambridge Dave Bassets 7 years were probably the most rewarding success wise although not pretty at times. I really enjoyed the football under Kendall/Heath Warnock did well in the championship but showed his limitations in the premiership. Robson failed miserably with the best squad since Harris/Furphy Wilson did ok but again with the players at his disposal should have done better. Time will tell how NC measures up in the list
  6. Who actually are these WUM's ? I can think of a few but no doubt my list is different to yours
  7. came out to With a little help from me friends and walked back in at H/T to Delta Lady. well done Mr Sinclair. I also could hear sailing from my half time position at the back of the south stand presumably in recognition of Mr Stewart's 70th birthday
  8. But to be fair we were the original one. though. As it was presumably not copyrighted (wouldn't thought it was possible ) there was nothing to stop other teams copying us. Presumably nobody thought the same about The Wednesday
  9. To be honest I don't ever remember a 5 year in Europe plan. The only plan I remember was Lee Straffords 4 year business plan which set out the following expectations 2008/2009 Stabilty 2009/2010 Play Offs 2010/2011 Play Offs 2011/2012 Promotion to Premier League
  10. I suppose it depends on the player and his current deal. O Grady for instance signed for Brighton in the Summer presumably on decent wages in The Championship he would be more difficult to negotiate a deal with than say Doyle or Ryan from Chesterfield
  11. The financial fair play rules do apply in the championship albeit on a different basis to Leagues 1 & 2 which operates salary cost management protocol whereby salary is a fixed percentage of income, Last years promoted teams Burnley were still enjoying there 4th tranche of parachute money and QPR their first tranche however you are correct in that there are no guarantees that bigger incomes/playing budgets guarantee success you only have to look at us under Robson although parachute payments were a fraction of what they are today Mccabe/west Ham certainly made up the difference
  12. They may be, they may also have an owner who is investing significant sums , however you were talking about crowds and income and that was my explanation why Wednesdays total income was dwarfed by other clubs in the same leagues income. Notwithstanding you will always get teams who punch above their weight on smaller income and wage bills,
  13. It is not really about gate money these days it is about TV money and commercial deals, Should you reach the holy grail of the premiership and then return to the championship you will enjoy the following parachute payments Year 1 £23M Year 2 £18M Year 3 £9M Year 4 £9M So at any one time depending on promotion /relegation you could have 3 teams with a £23M start (150% plus of Wednesday's current turnover) and a number of other teams with £18M start which becomes very difficult to compete with
  14. Did I miss some major deflation ,my first Pint of Stones in The Far Lees in 1974/1975 was 16p next year I frequented the Albert and it was 18p for a Pint of Trophy and a much more expensive 0.20p for a pint of Stones in The Wapentake. Now it is £5.15 for my G & T in AB1
  15. I think Mark Smith was definitely involved with the academy at one point
  16. That turned into an interesting thread, looks like Castleboy has developed a man crush on Frank perhaps they should get a room
  17. An ambitious alpha male, Sam (original name) landed a job heading the investment arm of a Saudi-owned company and launched an unsuccessful takeover bid for Sheffield United FC. He made millions developing property.
  18. I will respond to bring this back up although I am not obviously as well up on matters at S6 but is Maguire actually getting the game time as I thought Nuhiu and May were currently the preferred pairing
  19. Still exists on the continent one on most Italian high streets
  20. The problem is everything immediately slips into acrimonious point scoring from both sides of the divide and that is fro the older posters among us. Then we have the hit and run posters like Mr Morris. At least in the last few post a bit of civility to the opposite side has returned to the thread
  21. wasn't that rebinas,or was that on chapel walk:help: I think Rebinas was on High Court opposite The Attic sandwich shop. My shoe shop in my teens was Lennards, they had top loafers, I used covet them in the window every morning while waiting for the bus to De La Salle
  22. Brutus Penny Round is correct I got mine from Geoffrey Davis ,just round the corner from Bunny's at the entrance to The Castle Market if you were going to Harringtons I got my first Parka from Bunny's though
  23. Thought Varsity had closed with a new club opening there
  24. At least nobody has gone for the obvious racist response
