Haven't been back there for years. Brought up around that area before they knocked our house down in Saxon Road. Ostensibly for slum clearance purposes. Didn't feel like a 'slum' to me.  I was at Annes Road from 1944/45 until 1951. When was your mum there ? Maybe I know her if she was there at the same time. Bratby   10 #590 Posted January 19, 2006 I was at Annes Road from 1944/45 until 1951. When was your mum there ? Maybe I know her if she was there at the same time.  Can't remember the exact dates, but she was born circa 1938 so she would probably have been in the infants around the mid-forties. Her maiden name was 'Stacey'. Her full name was 'Patricia Elizabeth'. They lived in a huge, gloomy, gothic looking house further down Chesterfield Rd just before the railway goods sidings and what was ( I think - it's a long time ago, but her grandparents lived there until the early sixties ) a sawmill or something like. Also: I seem to remember there was a post-office a few houses down the hill towards Heeley. She wouldn't have had far to walk to school. windows   10 #591 Posted January 20, 2006 Reading every ones school days makes me realise how much my school days were different. The J.A.D was situated on what is now Arundel Gate looking up to the Library. Our playing field was at Bents Green, we all liked the bus ride there. Just off Norfolk street there was the Juvenile Court and the gym we used was under there. If the weather was fine we exercised on the courtyard outside the church on Norfolk Street. Somewhere at the side of the Lyceum we went up some stairs to our dining room escorted by a teacher. At the Lyceum, we would leave our autograph books to be collected later with the signature of Frank Randall or maybe the famouse ballerinas of our time. I,m afraid the ruined building of Marples enticed us to test its safety . We queued at thorntons whenever they had sweets in or we would otherwise make do with those brown lozenger that were supposed to be for colds. One day the teachers had found out and came round to each class(4) to tell us how bad this was for us, I think they had a word with Thorntons about it The Head was Mr Cartwrighr , the 2 Art teachers were Miss Mills and I think Mrs Mathews the French teacher was Miss Bingham and the Geography and Histry teacher was a flying officer Kyte tYpe whose name I cannot remember
 Share this content via...

bigkev   10 #598 Posted January 28, 2006 meggie you would have been a first year when I was there because I left in 1969 but I went back in 1971 to see some of the teachers mr bob roberts and mr such and mr white they would have been at both schools then the bottom school which use to be the girls school of jordanthorpe and the top school was jordanthorpe for the boys but just before I left they joined the schools together. so they were mixed i had some happy times there our science teacher then was either mr baggley or mr twigg I think it was mr twigg he had one of the metal work teachers who would have been mr gibbs build a canon on wheels for us and on the day we took it out on to the school yard to try it out, we used a ball bearing and fired it at a door that was stood up in front of the wall so as to stop it so to speak but he went through the door and through the wall, the canon finnished up embedded in the floor. this canon was only so big about 8inches high but it did its job. I wonder if you had the same woodwork teacher as us he use to throw the black board rubber at you if he caught you talking cant think what they call him he was only a small chap. would mr rooks still be there and batman adams its that long since I was there the brain cells have gone. meggie   10 #600 Posted January 29, 2006 Hi Bigkev The woodwork teacher who you are on about was mr Helliwell, he sadly is no longer with us he passed away a few years back. I never had woodworkmyself, but i remember those who did lived in fear of the dreaded flying blackboard rubber!! I used to like science... i got a house point for growing the biggest crystal once!!I was in the school athletics team. Can you remember the fire you had in the main hall? We stood on the playing fields watching it being put out.
 Share this content via...
