Back to Back Terraces

Recommended Posts

A lot can be seen on the 1950s maps on the Sheffield History website, e.g. this one of Netherthorpe (look at the area between Martin Street and Wentworth Street):

There are a handful of examples of pairs of back to backs which survive but have been "knocked through" to form a single through terrace. I understand there are a couple like this on Milton Street, off Hanover Way: they can be seen as back to backs on

and are still there.

Thats great thanks my mum was born in Wentworth Street and she more than likely lived in a back to back house which is probably on the map .

I was brought up in a back to back house on Newhall Road Attercliffe, there were quite a few of these properties back then down there. We were moved out in about 1960 during the slum clearance, being re-housed on Shiregreen. The houses were all demolished some time later.

Some time ago I saw a programme on television about back to back houses in Leeds. IIRC they sold them for a tiny sum and the new owners were responsible for upgrading them. I seem to remember them being turned into upside down houses. Does anyone else remember seeing this or am I imagining it?

Apparently Sheffield banned the building of back to back houses in 1864/5. Lots of information online. I read where, and I think that was in Leeds, back to back houses were adapted into one building, so possibly this happened in Sheffield. If it did, my guess would be remaining ones around the Broomhall area.

Yes I think that is what got me wondering there are some houses near Cemetery Road that look like they may have been back to backs
