St Mary's Walkley had 8 boys in my year (I think 24 pupils in total), 4 of whom took 11+, 2 of whom passed - including me. I went to King Edward VII - bit of a shock as 120 in my year and all boys and all bright!

There was also the Weldon family who lived on that road - and Florence Weldon married Harry Lacey from just along the road!

In the remote hope that we might be distantly related, I have a few Savages in my tree that precede yours. John Savage married Hannah Conor; child William Savage (born abt 1763) married Hannah Bee and had child Sarah Savage born abt 1791 who married Joseph Mettam - lived for a time in Bailey Lane, Sheffield.

I noted that responses to your question focus on web sites where you can build your tree and also access records and other people's trees. Generally, these charge you a subscription. If, however, your intent was to focus on building and printing your tree (using your own knowledge or free / paid for searches elsewhere), then I have found Legacy pretty good. It is free and you build your tree on your own PC (it only works on PCs although there may be compatible packages for other devices) and you can search and print from your tree. There is a modestly priced deluxe add-on that is a one-off fee and that gives a few extra bells and whistles which aren't essential but you might decide you want. Your legacy tree is on your PC and so is not visible or accessible by others - this may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want - but you can export branches of your tree and email them to others if you wish or use them to update an online tree on a subscription site. There are other similar packages but I have stuck with Legacy for many years now after searching for something suitable. Hope this helps - oh, and I have no allegiance to Legacy or any other genealogy package.

You could see if there are any local-based Facebook groups, join them and post a request. Genealogy / family history searches might also turn something up. Try FreeBMD, put in your dad's name (or your nan's) and the area / approximate dates and see what comes up. You can look for births or marriages or deaths etc. You can even search for births of children to parents and it is free.

I couldn't spot a likely marriage for his parents with the names you suggest but it is worth exploring - maybe expand to nearby towns in case he wasn't born in Sheffield (note that parts of Sheffield had different names in the past e.g. Ecclesall Bierlow and Wortley) or you could try a county.

And another - people are keen to help (says a lot about those from Walkley):-) There was Skinners (I think) on Walkley Road. They were in the end terrace with a large house next door, think it was Marriott's haulage?

Another possibility (but sounds less like your description): Davies Bakery was at the end at the bottom of Howard Road ... opposite the Yorkshire Bank . It was a double shop and had a big canvas awning that they pulled out to shade the window , And another remote possibility: There was Sellars at the top of Cromwell St opposite the Yorkshire bank. I am on a Facebook group relating to Walkley history and took the liberty of sharing your request on there. Here is a suggestion: There was Neals shop which had a bakery on Walkley lane where Carnaby St. joins it. Hope this is the one. Apparently, the bread smell was lovely! David

I lived in Walkely but fairly sure we called it "the rec" - I don't recall seeing it written down but that spelling would fit in with "recreation ground".

I think it might have been Robert Brothers that ran the "Dolphin Club" for children and linked them to pen pals around the country. I was a member and received a certificate when I was that sort of age.

So, just to make sure I have understood you, Doreen's mum (Ida) made your wedding cake and Ida's sister iced it? I didn't meet any of Ida's sisters but was told she had two, Gertrude and Edith but Edith died very young. Was Doug, Gertude's husband? Any idea when she started at Swann's?

I also remember Churchill's death as one of my earliest news memories. There were posters up outside Glossop Road swimming baths where our school was queuing up for our swim lessons - we were queuing ages and so had plenty of time to read them getting rather bored. I didn't understand who he was or his significance but it stuck in my memory for some reason.
