ATOL protection generally only covers tourists who buy package deals. It also applies to some flight-only bookings, particularly when the tickets are not received immediately. But if you bought a flight directly with an airline it is unlikely you will be covered. Under normal circumstances, passengers who are not ATOL protected would be asked to find, and pay for, their own way home But in this case, the DfT said everyone on a Thomas Cook holiday with a return flight to the UK within the two weeks will be brought home free of charge, whether they are Atol protected or not and regardless of their nationality

Being brought home at no cost to yourself is being bailed out. ATOL covered holiday makers according to the Minister for transport would be brought home exactly as they would as per their holiday. Non ATOL covered would be funded by the Govt and CAA.

I understand in principle but the point made on BBC this morning was those booking package deals with TC had ATOL protection included,those with flights only didn't however they had booked the flights.

You're terminology not mine - i have no issue with people getting a deal. I had a package via Expedia when Monarch went tits up Expedia didn't cover full reimbursement although i got my flights reimbursed but lost the cost of the hotel in Rome i'd booked.If i'd gone on the holiday the insurance would have covered everything. If people wanted to get a cheaper flight and didn't everything else correctly after considering the pitfalls why are they being bailed out.

I understand youre point and agree with you,you're obviously a seasoned and experienced traveller. Thousands of people aren't and do just look for a cheap flight only deal, or no insurance. IIRC at one time you had to have insurance witht the opertator then that was stopped so now people don't bother. I wasn't claiming that flight only was the reaon for their downfall but the debacle that some travellers now find themselves in.

I wonder how many people have Paypal and don't actually check their balance?

BUT the folks now stranded should pay there own way back - they wanted a cheap flight only and thats what they got. If they'd paid the going ATOL package rate they probably wouldn't be this mess. Neither would the tax payer - who would have thought our hard earned taxes to pay for someone elses holiday.

The problem and i know its disastrous for travellers BUT they've often taken a cheaper option to book travel and now someone else has to dig them out of a hole and bring them home free of charge. Perhaps if they'd booked ATOL package holidays Thomas Cook and Monarch would still be solvent. The chargeback on flights and holidays according to the guy on the news isn't cast in stone,its a voluntary scheme.

There are genuinely lots of reasons why people won't use public transport - i don't think any of them are eradicated by making the journey free. Over 65's get free transport and still take their cars shopping etc.

Chocolate sweets and biscuits already have 20% tax on them its calle dVAT. Admittedly not all of them but enough ofthem to realise it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference.

We went last weekend to introduce our grandson to it, whilst there we bought him some memorabilia in the form of a speedway bike toy. He would now like another one - the sellers online shop doesn't include the bike, and a smuch as i love him £20 to revisit the speedway for a toy is beyond even my limits. Not surprisingly i doubt it - everyone talks a good game about austerity until they have to get their hands in their own pockets. Its taken the best part of 15 years to even get a new parish council member in our village and now we have a complete change -the Labour councillors have been taken to task over the funding blackhole and continual losses and council tax rises,and been almost repla ed entirely by Conservative councillors. Standing for election doesn't mean a thing with the "boys club" in the background.

Its always been the same, as soon as the two laner ends and it gets into a village with crossroads it cant cope. It isnt always the light timing but often turners wanting to hang a right at the lights or sometimes even the HGV's taking a while to build up a head of steam going into Worksop.

That would be outside most drinking establishments,council offices and Houses of Parliament then. I have reported vehicles behaving suspiciously in my village - they are quite noticeable if you are actively aware of your surroundings. All of them drug dealers or buyers,funny how some of the people calling the police on here don't actively support arresting druggies or drug dealers.

Or stop and search them and then potentially get accused of being racist. The people have removed the powers of the police and now we all suffer. Ring 101 and log the complaint,thats what 101 is for.
