  1. I'd probably still go Pott Shrigley and then join the MARR at Woodford. It'll be easier once they complete the Poynton Relief road, which given they've completed the compulsory purchase of the land, I would think would be built before improvements to other routes (ie the Mottram bypass - for which exploratory work has begun; or the A6-M60 link - for which there is no funding allocated and quite a lot of opposition).
  2. Knowledge is more freely avavailable than ever before with more and more educated people, both globally and in the UK. The idea that knowledge and particularly that of climate change is hidden from people is absurd and insidious. These notions, that remove the responsibility from individuals serve only to perpetuate the inaction of society; making it someone else's problem.
  3. Given the rate of species loss, it might already be too late for us. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jul/10/earths-sixth-mass-extinction-event-already-underway-scientists-warn
  4. It often happens during hot spells, IIRC there was a thread on here about it some time ago. Basically the source of water changes from reservoirs to stored ground water aquifers, which pick up minerals from the rocks.
  5. IIRC they were some of, if not the, first roads Amey resurfaced.
  6. Parkrun is on for Saturday so the fence should be gone before then.
  7. Police in Manchester will enforce zig-zags with video or still from a mobile phone with submission via email.
  8. From the plans it looks like card factory will go, along with all the places opposite up as far as home bargains. Can't see the plans being much of an improvement to the shopping experience if I'm honest. It'll be like a dingy tube station entrance on Bradfield road, complete with folding metal gates.
  9. The drawing of the front elevation clearly shows the building extending all the way from the Shakey to the bank. There's no room for parking at the front.
  10. The fact remains that drivers shouldn't be there. The conflict between pedestrians and drivers occurs due to a design fault which doesn't consider the way in which people actually behave. In any case a car waiting at the crossing won't be traveling fast enough to cause serious accidents.
  11. It's ironic that you say it's not a confusing area yet you are confused yourself about it. If there is a queue of traffic a driver should stop at the light to the south/east before Forbes road. That is where the stop line is for that crossing. If the exit is not clear that is where drivers should stop. There should not be cars stopping at the crossing.
  12. You should never be in a position to need to stop at the crossing when the green man is on. You shouldn't stop at the crossing because there's no stop line there. Far too many people ignore the fact it's a box junction.
  13. Exactly that. I think a serious rethink is needed for the whole section from Ripley St to the corner to give more consideration to pedestrian movements and slow through traffic so that impacts are not so serious. A shared space might be one consideration.
  14. Police cordon is around the crossing. I hope there is a positive outcome for those involved.
  15. It is but so are a lot of things that bus drivers do consistently. Idling being one of the most common.
  16. Yeah, gosh...damn those people and their checking of evidence getting in the way of a needless rant. And damn education for giving people the ability to find out things for themselves. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301479716310556
  17. I believe general guidance on verges is to cut them where there is a need for safety/visibility but to cut less often to allow a benefit for wildlife/plants and reduce pollution.
  18. IIRC there was talk not that long ago, that the council wanted to charge parkrun for use of the park. That was before the Stoke Gifford thing blew up and bans on charging were proposed by the government.
  19. I'm so confused by this thread. Paula is suggesting that Sheffield uni ranking has dropped because of international students. As far as I can tell this is nonsense for 2 main reasons. First, many other universities pursue the same strategy. Manchester has 38% international students, the vast majority of whom are Chinese (Manchester has the biggest 'China town' in the UK) and it was ranked 8th last year in times HE. Second, university rankings are not based on the results of students but on teaching quality, research impact, income etc. So whether Chinese students do well or poorly it should have little/no impact on rankings. Manchester has a policy to try to get in the world top 20. It's strategy has been to recruit new part time/full time Profs to include on their REF return. But it's cost them a great deal financially. Sheffield I know has lost a number of profs to other institutions seemingly because they are pursuing a more sustainable pay policy at the top. The Arsenal of universities to some extent.
  20. When you rent a space, house, office or whatever you do so on the understanding that it's fit for purpose/habitation. The market is no different, the traders pay for the space and the landlord has a duty to maintain it.
  21. Find the one up for re-election (Rippon?). They're most likely to respond. Labour are choosing their mayoral candidate so I guess they'll be busy naval gazing.
  22. The A6 MARR is only the current component of the South East Manchester road investment. Stockport is upgrading St Marys way into a new dual A road as an 'inner ring road'. Later phases will include upgrades to A34 and A6 to M60 (j25) link (Hazel Grove bypass); currently at consultation stage, as well as a Poynton bypass. http://www.semmms.info/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/protected-route-corridor-for-the-A6-to-M60-scheme.pdf http://www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/pdf/highways/poynton-relief-road/prr-progress-update-dec-2017.pdf
  23. A6-A623 peak forest is generally the most reliable but even that was closed until this morning
  24. There were less than 12 million cars on the road in 1970. There are now well over 30 million.
  25. The issue is obvious. Thornsett is not a gritting route. Given Amey's failure to grit many secondary routes and keep access to all of Sheffield's work places why should priority be given to only the places they need to get. It's like if I was in control of gritting and decided to grit my own road so I could get home easily.
