  1. I remember Blanchards and their money chute but not the window display. Information about the store here https://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/search/?q=blanchards
  2. I would recommend Richer Sounds. Knowledgeable staff who don't push you into things you don't want.
  3. Wouldn't think so - they are at Duxford for Battle of Britain memorial flight later then will return to RAF Scampton.
  4. Most returning students are probably already here due to landlords starting rent contracts from August. Thousands of new students arrive over a few days. It is very well planned by the unis in terms of spreading out arrival days, times and different routes into Sheffield. Lots of staff and students give up their time to make it go as smoothly as possible. There are however bound to be queues. That said, I went to Bangor and back yesterday to drop off my fresher daughter and the Sheffield gridlock was still going strong here when I got back!
  5. Red Arrows were due over Elland about 2.50 so probably that as they are then going on to Cambridge . Elland are also due a Lancaster Bomber about 3.15 but not sure where that is then headed.
  6. Hi - just wondered who you get to collect it? I may need to get rid of one too!
  7. I was there 1979 to 1984 with Mr Barton (history) as form teacher and Mr Furniss (English) as head of lower school. I loved it yet couldn't wait to leave Rememebr Mrs Hipsley measuring length of skirts and slits and size of checks on summer dresses! Happy days.
  8. Just replied on the snow megathread too, snowing in Deepcar, I have 2 slices and a crust of white bread then a granary loaf in the freezer, what will I do?
  9. snowing in deepcar, I only have 2 slices and a crust of white bread then it's a brown granary in the freezer, what should I do?
  10. Hi - I live in Deepcar with children at Stocksbridge High School. There are children in most year groups from Ecclesfield/ Chapeltown/ High Green areas and there is a bus from over there. Also a few from Hillsborough area. Did you go to open days last week? If not I would arrange a visit and sound out the staff about admissions limits and how full they usually are.
  11. This thread has made me chuckle. My mum also used to warn me not to stay out manking when I went out with a new boy. My dad always called the Dirty Dancing film, Mucky Manking. I still call it that to this day and in fact so does my 17 year old daughter and all her friends seem to know what it means too!
  12. When I was still at home, I seem to think ours came from Visionhire in Hillsborough. When I got married in 1989 and decided to buy a telly, my parents were horrified - what if it breaks down!!
  13. Been in a few times since reopened for drinks and meals. Friendly efficient staff. New menu - good choice of everyday meals - nicely cooked and quick service. Glad it seems to be back on the up. Lots of familiar faces back in.
  14. I've seen a scrap van before 7am cruising slowly through Deepcar twice this week. Open backed truck with lots of broken lawnmowers, garden furniture, bikes and similar. Seems a bit early to be honestly collecting.
  15. I also know the manageress you mention. She and mum still write/ ring each other although neither fit to visit each other now sadly. My mum also worked at other branches of Broughtons on Ecclesall Rd and Commonside, eventually becoming a mangeress herself. I remember being taken to visit old Mrs Broughton as a little girl. ---------- Post added 28-06-2013 at 20:03 ---------- This thread has set me thinking again. I remember my dad taking me to 'the beer off' returning Magnet empties and buying more! Was this bottom corner of Dykes Hall road? I delivered papers in the early 80s from the newsagent at the bottom of Clarence Road/ Dykes Hall and also worked there on Sunday mornings for a while. It's still a newsagent but different owners now.
  16. Paper round in Hillsborough 1981 aged 13 £2.25 a week for 6 evenings and an extra 50p for turning up in a morning just in case the morning deliveries weren't covered! Also worked in paper shop Sundays 6-10am for an extra £2.00 and my mum brought me a cooked breakfast in on a plate half way through. When I was at college 1984 -1986, worked at K Shoes on Pinstone Street on Saturdays for £9.25 a day plus commission (but never got much as most senior staff served first so I was bottom of the pile).
  17. Have just seen this thread and thought I'd take a look at 'old' Hillsborough then realised that 35 years ago, I was 10! I lived on Clarence road until 1989 in the house that my 86 year old mum was born and still lives in. She worked at Blaskeys (possibly wallpaper type shop?) from leaving school in 1940 then moved to Broughtons bakers a few years later. She also worked evenings at the Shakespeare on Bradfield Road until the late 60s/ early 70s then at the Castle on Dykes Hall Road until she retired in the late 1980s. I vaguely remember the Chinese chip shop opposite amongst the terraces until they were knocked down. Also a newsagent and was it a greengrocers below the castle on opposite corner? Brought back a lot of memories.
  18. There's also a small private pool at Penistone that does individual and group lessons and I think you can hire for private sessions. My children learnt there in very small groups. http://www.penistoneswimming.co.uk/
  19. I thought that when the residential home closed and residents were moved (against their wishes) to other homes, the deal was that this site was earmarked for some sort of sheltered housing for the elderly?
  20. My daughter picked up a leaflet today advertising £7.00 weekly megarider for children who have a travel pass for a promotional period to July. However it is only valid on the tram and not on the supertram link buses. They advertise this as you pay for school journeys and get evenings and weekends free. As she has to travel from Deepcar on the SL bus first to get to the tram to continue on to school, we would have to pay £7.00 weekly total in bus fares then purchase £7.00 megarider so wouldn't be worth it to us for the odd evening or weekend journey. It seems unfair when you can get on the tram for 70p child fare and continue your journey on the SL bus or vice versa.
  21. I remember Don Allott, I think - involved in teaching hairdressing at Granville College in the mid eighties. His daughter was on my course too.
  22. I'd like to add thanks to A&E at Sheffield Children's hospital too. Attended with my son this week late at night as he needed stitches. Very full and noisy waiting room and lots of patients' families in and out on phones, going for a smoke and complaining about the wait yet lots didn't seem to need to be there. All staff seen - receptionist, triage, doctor and nurse were cheerful, welcoming and deserve a medal - thank you
  23. My neighbour always used Wentworth Garden Centre. Haven't been for a while but they used to have a large pets and aquatics section.
  24. We tend to go Sunday mornings for £6.00 standard and you get 10% off if you register and book online
  25. I've bought and sold Brownies uniform on ebay. It might be worth a try.
