  1. Shamelessly bumping this one back to the top....
  2. I must admit I could never see the differences in soil colour etc when I saw archaeology on screen, practical experience has taught me what to look for and that changes in soil etc are often more felt than seen. They did initally do explanations of things like cropmarks, postholes, geophysics (sometimes I can't see what they're on about either!!!!) in the initial few series of Timeteam but they seem to assume now that you've watched it for the last 10 years and know what they are on about.
  3. I never really had a life plan, I can't plan more than a year or so in advance for even the major things (uni, jobs etc) My dad has been seriously ill since I was about 12 and my brother has an amazing ability to throw many spanners in the works just when you think everything is moving along nice and smoothly. Consequently I learned to plan only for the short term and not get my hopes up for anything beyond that. Deciding to start uni was a decision made only about 6 months before the term started and I never really expected to finish (that was a whole 3 years ahead and therefore beyond my control). I've never really had ambitions, have never had an ideal job, house, family situation etc, I just see how life goes and if i like it I carry on, if not I try to change things. Even though ultimately I'm in control of my life I still cannot bring myself to plan things out. I know this really annoys my boyfriend (though not my family as we are all very similar) because I can't look forward to things like moving in together as its probably more than a few months away that that will happen!!! Am I weird???? Em xx
  4. I’m a postgrad archaeology student doing an essay on how TV has influenced your view and opinions of archaeology. I’d like to ask you to answer a few questions: How many of the above TV programmes/films have you seen? What is your opinion of them? Has the TV changed your opinion of archaeology? In what way?
  5. she did, every day and she enjoyed a diet rich in fruit (bananas, apples and especially pears) and veg (raw carrot and raw potato were favs)
  6. lol probably!! if we put her blanket in there first, it was amazing how small she could make herself when she tried... (she was only the size of a whippet really) not bad for a dog the equivalent of 115 years old!!!!
  7. LMAO that must be where she's gone!!! she's hiding in my 'puter!!!! (oddly enough she was almost blind!!! )
  8. My username is the shortened version of my name and my date of birth, I always used it as an email address so just kept it on here (now none of you have an excuse to forget my birthday!!!! and my age...dammit ) the avatar is my exhousemate's dog who went missing in janaury, we never did find her but i like the pic so its staying for now. Em
  9. I tried beconase years back, it made me sneeze so much more!!! kinda defeats the object I have tried the diet thing tho, and from the moment my hayfever starts I cut out all milk and milk products (I don't eat egg so i'm not sure if that would make a difference too) and although it kills me to not have pizza and cheese for the summer I do find that it makes the hayfever so much more bearable. Em xx
  10. I've been convinced for the last couple of days that i've been coming down with a cold, today i noticed that not only is my throat sore but its also itchy as are my ears (my first signs of hayfever) which makes me think its not a cold but hayfever already!!! the annoying thing is that its started in the last couple of days, when i've spent the previous 10 outside all day in the welsh mountains with absolutely no symptoms whatsoever!!!!! grrrr.... just as an extra, i discovered a new antihistamine last year that is the first one thats ever worked for me (others took away some of the symptoms but this one got most of them) its NeoClarityn (the old clarityn was useless) and it works wonders!!! ask your doc to try it! Em xx
  11. it always seemed like an hour and a half...maybe it was because i normally went from doncaster.... *hangs head in shame*
  12. Isn't there a train from sheffield? goes right to manchestar airport, takes about an hour and a half i think and runs every hour.
  13. I spoke to a newspaper photographer last year who had a Nikon D70 and a Canon-something else, he said the D70 was the best camera he'd ever had, its good enough for a professional AND cheap enough and easy (?) enough for an amateur The problem with Canons (i think) is if you buy lots of lenses they will only ever fit a Canon, the lenses you have for something like a D70 will fit other cameras if you decided to upgrade again in the future.
  14. Surely the IVF system is stretched enough just providing help for those who cannot have children naturally; proposing treatment for those who can have children and just want to be more fussy about the type they get is just going to stretch it even further, possibly preventing those who simply want ONE child!!!
  15. I remember reading the label of a sunny delight bottle once, I discovered that one of the ingredients is vegetable oil WHY????????
  16. You are right, Wincobank is a scheduled ancient monument, any disturbance of the ground is illegal. You must get permission from the landowner before detecting anywhere, and unless you have a written agreement, anything you find on a persons land technically belongs to them (unless it is nice and spectacular and classed as treasure - then it belongs to the crown) You should take all your finds to a museum (when it is open) and let them make a note of them (what they are, how old they are) and the findspot (6 figure grid ref is very useful), they will then let you have the finds back unless you want to loan/sell them to the museum. If you have all the proper permissions to detect and do not detect in illegal areas it should be a fun and rewarding hobby, but please be responsible and report all your finds as they are all archaelogically important!!!!! Have fun
  17. I'm driving from Parson Cross (Barnsley road/Ecclesfield end of Parson Cross) to the city centre as I'm at the archaeology dept on West Street. Takes me 10 mins to drive thru to city centre, the spare 20 mins is for parking and walking down to West Street. The bus (75 or 76) takes a minimum 30 mins in good traffic and I still have to walk about the same distance as I would from my car. Em
  18. I considered the fact that whether I used the bus or not I'd be paying the same amount of road tax and the same amount of insurance on my car, I also park in free places so there is no extra cost there. There may be a little more wear and tear on my car at the end of the day, but I consider it worth it when I gain usually at least an hour every day (I have to leave myself an hour to get into uni by bus, by car I only need half an hour) and as a student, an extra hour's study time a day is a valuable thing!! It was a very considered decision and I did take a while to weigh up how much I would be paying week by week, in the end the car won! Em
  19. Its already above £2.50 if i want to travel before 9am, which i do have to, i also don't travel in every day so it makes the weekly ticket just as bad. For the price of a day saver ticket I can get 30 miles in my car.... what would you do????
  20. I decided when I became a student again that I'd go in to uni on the bus instead of being lazy and taking my car... however, I soon worked out that at no less than £2.50 a day busfare it was cheaper to take the car, its quicker, costs less and I can park near to uni for free busfares going up again just means they are pushing me more to the car and less towards public transport, keep going, i love my lil car
  21. I'd call evildrneil for any question that involved bondage and /or bears there ya go neil
  22. There's a few places just inside Derbyshire if you don't mind travelling that far. Riber Hall and Eyam Hall are just a couple (don't know how expensive they are tho!!!) Not that I've been looking
  23. I met my mum and a friend out at Hathersage and had a nice 5 mile walk in the sunshine and fresh air (I'm trying to prevent the evil flu thing taking hold...its trying!!!) Then I went off to cheer the b/f up who has REAL man-flu Em
  24. lol mine gets called many things...none of them repeatable on a family forum!!!
