  1. The basic problem with the rubbish strewn about the maisonettes is the tenants who just dont care, they are the ones who make the area look like a war zone.In one way it is the councils fault as they dont do anything about them - but- the tenants that do care about their Maisonettes should name them and shame them. Where I live homeowners of the patio type houses and council tenants that live on Spotswood Close/ Mount use this block of Maisonettes as a dumping ground for their own rubbish and old furniture and its all because they are to idle to fill their own bins because an empty bin means it doesnt have to be put out for collection.
  2. We have had the same problem but we got the man in charge out and he told us that the cleaning team are supposed to do a 45 minute clean on a Tuesday(handrails, railings etc) and a tidy up on a Friday, your days may be different. We got it sorted out in the space of two months. Dont wait for a reporter to turn up, give the Star a ring and ask them to send someone out. Even though we are Council tenants we pay in our rent over £1.500 for this cleaning service(that amount is shared by all the tenants) if I remember right Sands Close pay the most.If you have a digital camera take some photos as proof and send them to the Housing Manager and you could e-mail them to the Star yourself.
  3. There is a book available at The Sheffield Scene on Surrey St also at Waterstones in Orchard Square, by a man Called Ron Clayton and its a collection of photographs about Sheffield and in it is a photo of Dennis Edge along side a woman called Kath Russell, they are both working on pot forks Dennis is having a pull on his cigarette. I dont know how old he was when the picture was taken, probably in his twenties. The photo was taken at DONNELLYS cutlery firm that was situated on Portobello St just opposite St Georges Church.
  4. Cooper Brothers last factory still stands on Arundel Street its near to the Howard St end of the Lane, I believe its being turned into flats. I worked there for a short time back in the seventies, they merged with Frank Cobb on Broad St and became Cooper - Cobb but that factory has gone. British Silverware on Windsor St near Norfolk Bridge bought them out and B.S. still use Coopers marks.
  5. I worked with a DENNIS EDGE at a Cutlery firm called DONNELLYS on PORTOBELLO. Dennis was sixteen when I first met him, he was an acomplished Mouth Organ player and he had a fair voice on him. He now lives on MANOR LANE, he is in the Phone Book.
  6. Im afraid thats all Pawson & Brailsford did -- print -- labels, leaflets, books in fact everything that was printable they did it and they must have been very successful because of the size of their premises that are still there on the corner of High St and East Parade.
  7. The building on the right is Cole Brothers, you can see part of the name on the building itself. So looks as if it was taken from just across the road probably from Pawson and Brailsfords old building on the corner of East parade and High St. Ipso facto the old and original Coles Corner.
  8. The terms of the lease for The Far Lees specify it has got to be a Public House for a set number of years, which still has a fair number to go. People complain about the high cost of goods in the Newfield Green Co-Op but lots of people still use it and its not because they havnt got their own car to go elsewhere its because its very handy and there is a fair range of different shops on the Green, lots of people carp at it being expensive but they still buy cigarettes or have enough money for the HARD LOOKING DOG, (give me strength) The Wyvern has a small shop and its a godsend if you run out of the basics.
  9. I remember that but I thought it was just a house with the front window open ? I dont recall them selling anything else but candy floss but my memory may be playing tricks as it was over 53 years ago. It was on the left hand side of the road going towards the park. Do you remember the Pierrot shows that were held on the open air stage there too? The petrified tree stump that was there was originall found when the Midland Station was being built and subsequently sent to High Hazels, its now in the Botanical Gardens.
  10. I used c.d. labels but found them prone to coming off at times, so I bought an EPSON STYLUS PHOTO R220 printer and it prints straight on to the disc, its brilliant. You can by ink jet printable plain c.d.s anywhere now, even Staples have them. The printer cost just over £60
  11. The Rickshaw Chinese Restaurant was on the corner of Broomhall St and Devonshire Street, I used to go there quite often. Ron Delta the Comedian was a regular diner--- but to when it first opened I dont know.
  12. Mick didnt die on a football pitch, he passed away in hospital with Laurie by his side, such a tragic waste. Laurie gave me Micks wallet which I will always keep.
  13. My post on the subject was removed, I suppose it wasnt P.C. Just what happened to free speech? (By the way it was not racist)
  14. Its a grade 2 listed building so hopefully it should be o.k. but knowing this Council nothing is sacred.
  15. Im afraid they have shut up shop and gone, the shop is completley empty.
  16. Yes hes still there they did some golf trophies and medals for a friend if mine a couple of weeks ago.
  17. I see these people every day and believe me they ARE no-hopers they just want to cause damage and mayhem, Ive seen the same bus shelter glass smashed three times in a week, things like that do give me the right to say NO-HOPERS, The Far Lees vacant pub set on fire three times in three days ,twice in one evening, what would you call them? misunderstood children?
  18. Does this S14 crew belong to somekind of rowing club? or are they just a bunch of no-hopers looking for attention from fools at university by giving them creditabilty for their sad lives. Yes I am from Gleadless !
  19. William Turner & Co were situated on Eyre St and Furnival St,they were Melters,Refiners and rollers of non-Ferrous metals, they also dealt in Gold,Silver,Copper,Brass,Nickel and other alloys. They mainly produced Spoon and Fork blanks in fact all types of table cutlery blanks. They got into difficulties in the late seventies and the firm I worked for at the time (George Butlers) considered buying them but we didnt act quick enough and their big rival Nickel Blanks on Smithfields bought them out.I have worked with Turners blanks and they were very good. The Sheffield Scene is owned by the owner of Nickel Blanks and he is the richest man in Sheffield by far.
  20. They are to idle to get out of the cars, Ive seen old and infirm people struggle with cases while they stay put in the driving seat.(private and hackney) I can remember the time when they used to get out of the cab and open the door and help you with your luggage, they are all the same white and asian.
  21. Looked like a boy racer to me, one car ended up on the grass verge at the top of Blackstock
  22. Wack has only been married three times, he does tend to strech the truth to breaking point. He still thinks he is a teenager, it seems he has not looked in the mirror lately. He now lives at No 55 Dreamland!
  23. I work at Mellors and the work is terrible. the only thing worth buying is the silver plate pride but the pride knife blades are a joke but some of that is not what it seems as it doesnt say MADE IN SHEFFIELD on it. The other thread that mentions Osbournes that firm went two years ago and the factory was demolished their order book is owned by Nickel Blanks I believe
  24. SHEFFIELD SCENE on SURREY ST, Im in the trade and they sell very good quality cutlery. Don Alexanders isnt named that any more its now the Sheffield Shop. The firm that I work for has a range of kitchen knives in there but beware the large knives have FRENCH BLADES on them and are not very good, the handles are made in hope valley. The small pairing knives that are whet or scalloped are completely made in Japan no matter what they tell you there in the shop. They are supposed to be designed by a local designer.
