  1. I dont think DIXONS made any pewter holloware. I may be wrong but they were known for their silver. The finial may be an acorn, are the marks apart from JAMES DIXON AND SON scratched on or are they good clear marks? The B could mean BRITANIA METAL but that is a shot in the dark.
  2. I think if some Drivers want to volunteer for Christmas Day duty why not BUT they should be paid at least double time with a day off in lieu.A basic fare of two pound is not unreasonable (I know some will dis-agree)
  3. The old Trams that always ran on time with the no SPITTING SIGNS. Being able to go to a park and see it in all its glory. The throng in the Fish Market every Saturday. Whitsuntide Clothes Whit Walks The Easter Parade The fair at the Farm Grounds Being able to burn most of your rubbish on your house fire( I know its pollution) Children playing with a stick and a bike rim. Kite season Marble season Children playing Kick Can Children playing Farmer Farmer. Little girls dressed as little girls and not clones of pop singers Short trousers Joy-Sticks Hopalong Cassidy Two way family favourites The well being when you went in town (no idiots or hoodies) Being able to play on the street for over half an hour at a time between cars coming The Empire Theatre with all its star performers The Rag and Tag Market Seeing steam trains at the Victoria and Midland Stations Council workmen cleaning the streets with just a brush and shovel with a horse and cart in tow
  4. plain talker should visit this estate now, I do agree not all immigrants are scumbags? (where did you get that word it doesnt mean anything) and by the way I am white English.
  5. Ive lived here on the valley for just over forty years and Ive seen it go from a very desirable place to live to a place where un-desirables live. You can tell the the decent families that live around me, their windows are clean, their front doorsteps are clean, their windowsills are clean. The houses that have been turned over to the influx of foriegn people are a complete disgrace. The waiting list to get a house on this estate used to be ten years or more but the incomers have changed all that, its sad to see such a beautiful estate turned into a shadow of what it used to be.
  6. The 47 is the only bus that I can catch home, but they are either packed or missing. The full buses empty at Heeley Green fair enough that only one of two buses thsy can catch but I like a lot of other people have no alternative bus as I live on Leighton Rd, so if a 47 is to full to board I have to wait for the next one which could turn up in ten minutes or more likley 30 to 45 minutes. To-night I waited from 5.26.p.m. to 5.50 p.m. and low and behold two came to-gether it must be mating season! The managers that run this so called service should be made to use these buses for a year, perhaps then they may get it in their thick skulls just how much we have to put up with. Before anyone decides that 24 minutes isnt a long wait -- when you have been working for thirteen hours its like pugatory. The prams that people push on the bus are a joke, they are like a small car, o.k. they have to get home but why not fold them up, it seems that they also think that the area with the two single facing seats are their domain but it is not, the times I have seen people having to move because a pram is pushed into their shins, unbelieveable!!!!
  7. It is James Dixon & Son, you could try as I have mentioned already BRITISH SILVERWARE,RIVERSIDE WORKS,WINDSOR ST,S47WB they may have records from James Dixon as they had all the dies and marks of Dixons or you could get in touch log on http://www.sheffieldgalleries.org.uk and get in touch with them about your silverware.
  8. This is only a guess but the J.B & S may be J. Billams & Son as I say that is just a guess, that firm has now gone. The E P B M stands for ELECTRO - PLATED BRITANIA METAL The hand scratched mark is another thing entirely, no Holloware Manufacturer scratches their wares by hand, unless its a design or a customer request. The most obvious reasonis that some-one took it to "Uncles" at sometime in its life, it was taken to a Pawnshop and the pawnbroker did the scratch mark but usually they put all the date on. Im 99% sure thats the reason for the No 26, I have an old silver watch and its covered in the same kind of marks, it seemed to have spent more time with "Uncle" than with its owner. I dont really know about the Nos 2115 it could have been a design Number. I hope this helps.
  9. The trumpet trade mark is still in use, its used by British Silverware on Windsor St down Attercliffe. The ring of porcelain may be Ivory and it was used to stop the heat from the tea-pot body spreading to the handle so it didnt burn yourself when pouring out your tea. Ebony was used in place of Ivory sometimes but it depended on customer requirements. The only sure way to stop Silver tarnishing for a great length of time is to place it in an airtight cabinet.Prior to the Industrial revolution silver never tarnished if left in the air and it was the sulphur from burning coal which did the damage and unfortunatley it still happens to-day. Sweat from your finger tips will also tarnish silver and for some reason womens perspiration is more harmful than mens.
  10. I have sat on a bus and seen some of the passengers who get on and I get a bit irate with them just sitting there, they decide to get their fare out on the bus instead of having it ready, women seem to be the ones who mostly do this. You can understand why some bus drivers are like they are, they have to put up with certain types of people for eight hours a day, drunks, foul mouthed youths including girls, people who can hardly speak English, Im afraid that I could not be polite ALL the time if I was a bus driver. As for them being late, its a pain waiting for a bus that is late or just doesnt turn up -- but -- the late bus isnt always the drivers fault, its the stupid roadworks that have plagued this city for twenty years , missing buses are a problem, all I know is that FIRST have a staff shortage so some some buses are not run but it always seems to be on my route that these buses (47 Herdings ) are missing. As for passengers moaning you cant really blame them, bad day at work, stood in a queue in the rain, having to get home on time for one reason or another, all kinds of things can make anybody a moaner even a bus driver. Why dont First have the time of the bus on its destination board so you can tell if its early or late, no need to say sorry Im late you can see for yourself if its running on time.
  11. The give-away is that they are planted in concrete !!
  12. I know where a 13 year old lad called WHITE (surname) was on the 6th of october at 5 a.m.he and his mate was on the roof of the FAR LEES pub on Leighton Rd, they were seen by the landlord, his mate legged it and MASTER WHITE was caught lying down in the shadows on the roof, trouble was the Landlord knew him so he let him go because he was only a 13 yr old lad, "I couldnt hit him, he was only a boy" but this boy is getting on to six foot. The landlord should have punched him, then let him explain to the police or his parents just how and why he was punched.
  13. What look like new tunnels have been found on the development outside the Train Station -- but -- instead of informing the Archaeology dept about the discovery the holes into the tunnels were quickly filled so as the impending excavation would mean a delay on the project. One tunnel was just outside where the tram depot was (just near the Norfolk Pub). In all two tunnels were found and as to whether they were ancient or just old we will never know.
  14. When I was a child my Father bred chickens and rabbits on our back garden for the table, the chickens provided us with fresh eggs and when my Mother fetched them down to the house the safest place to put them was in our very large victorian glass sugar basin, they were stood on their ends and they were always had bits of chicken s--t on them but we never ailed anything. Children always seem to be ill now a days.
  15. I cant answer all your queries but but THE MOOR was what its name implies, it was Sheffield moor and it was notorious for thieves and robbers (nothing changes) and honest people had to hire gaurds to escort them to Heeley and other districts in the vicinity. It just sort of developed as people moved further from High St and at that time The Grapes on Trippet Lane was on the edge of rough moorland. There are books to be had from Sheffield Scene on Surrey St about the bombing in the war but there must be some on the net.
  16. I heard that it put up to an extra £50 on the value of some of the properties !!
  17. If anyone is interested in the old country trades dying out. Go up onto Ringinglow road and watch a Dry Stone - Waller in action, hes working just down from the Norfolk Arms on the same side of the road, take your children along to see a dying trade and then try to work out just how long it took to build all the walls in the immediate area ? years and years!
  18. I remember that they had a Hippo there and they fed it full cabbages and the water it was in was filthy. It was a very good thing when it was closed down.
  19. There is a shop on Shoreham St just before the junction of Charlotte Rd, its next to a fruit shop. It just deals in Comics rare and sought after copies.
  20. Im sorry I cant help you Im more of a cutlery man, doesnt it have any marks on the base?
  21. The old designs are the best and the reason for tarnish on the silver is simply because of sulphur and other contaminents in the air, prior to the industrial revolution in England silver never tarnished because the air was clean. The kitchen range of David Mellor knives may look good but they have a tendency to flip up with the blade edge pointing up which is not very safe and the overall finish is poor and they have French blades on them again very poor forgings.
  22. When I went to work for David Mellor he actually thanked me for improving the quality of his cutlery by my polishing and silver finishing but the knives are a bit of an enigma, true they dont balance but thats because, when David started to make his own cutlery he had not much idea about what was what and by mistake or design he put dessert blades on table handles and tea blades on dessert handles result no balance also none of the spoon or forks are ever set to sit on the table correctly. The blades on the knives are also very poorly finished and they are full of hollows and dont look good at all.Sorry but I have been used to doing very good quality cutlery (mainly at George Butlers ) all my life and I can only type the truth.
  23. Passed the end of Ringinglow Rd (Hathersage end) at 5.00 p.m to-day. and the diversion and road closed signs were down as were the diversion signs on Hathersage Rd,
  24. Kitty was indeed from Ireland but I read somewhere that Arthur was from somewhere in Lincolnshire. He died on stage in Hull and is buried there, their films were great fun and not a swear word to be heard, God rest his soul.
  25. If you still have the original boxes and the cutlery is in good condition it is now becoming collectors items. Pride is still made at Hathersage but David Mellor is in a home as he now suffers from Alzeimhers.
