  1. If you are wanting a game on Sundays Ibelieve that Colley club are wanting some players for the new season. They play their home games down at Jubilee ground on Claywheels lane .If you are interested give Jubilee a ring on 2347685 and ask for Dougie. If he's not there they should give you his number
  2. I've lived in North Sheffield all my life,Foxhill,High Green Hillsborough,Wincobank and now Wadsley Bridge.Where I live now it's two minutes away from fantastic countryside and five minutes away from very good shopping and amenities.Parson Cross Church of England Primary school, incidentally has one of the best results in Sheffield for all round education.I used to go to High Storrs Grammar School andI used to look forward to going home "back oop north".If ever anybody wants to see Sheffield in all it's glory go on to the "backedge" at foxhill and just enjoy the view!!
  3. What about the boutique at the top of Charles street that was owned by Roger Howe ,Pete Stringfellow's best mate.It was called"Lift up your skirts and fly".There was also the Male Boutique on Orchard Street .
  4. stopped there last year for a weeks holiday with my good lady!found some nice digs half board good food good price good company!Couple of decent pubs in colwyn bay ,decent shopping area, some good old book shops and a great beach to walk along!great position to explore the north wales coast right up to Angelsey.Llanberis is amazing going inside the mountain to see the workings of a fast power station is awesome [sounds anorakish ] but it isn't!Have a walk on Bangor Pier and have scones at the end great!Go to betswy and just chill out at the side of the river !Go up the cable at LLandudno the view at the top is awesome! All in all we had a great week !! Forget about doom and gloom merchants try it out ,be prepared to travelaround and you'll enjoy it!!
  5. Check on Barry Hayles current form! He's scored 13 goals in total in the last three seasons!!Not exactly prolific .Perhaps Whorenock has signed him on the form he was in when Fulham got promotion.
  6. On the bottom of the Moor was the Landsdown,is that what you are thinking of?There was also the Traveller's Rest at the bottom where Shirley used to work behind the bar but that got demolished about 1967.There wasn't really a rockers bar in the centre of town then, though there was a good scene downstairs at the Nelson.
  7. i believe that you will find that Cannon Brewery shut about 5 years ago and production moved to Burton.Hope brewery on Claywheels lane shut 10 years ago .These closures were a direct result of the "Beer Orders " brought in by the Tory Government. These {with much pressure from CAMRA } stopped the breweries being able to own alot of pubs and brew beer aswell. What happened then was the breweries sold the pubs to pub companies who shut the pubs that used to be subsidised by the breweries. The breweries were then sqeezed on profit margins by the pub companies so they sold or shut the breweries and moved into hotels .So thanks to the tories and to CAMRA that is why there are no proper breweries left in Sheffield
  8. when saturday comes wasn't filmed in Wards brewery but in Cannon brewery on rutland road where proper Stones was brewed! Other places in the film were the bookies above the White Horse on Halifax road and Wentworth house on the 'cliffe.
  9. a couple of shops I remember from the past are Peter Robinsons top of Snig Hill [old meeting place] Male boutique on Orchard street ,Lift up your skirts and Fly top of Charles street i think. How many went to John Temple to get a suit made? Can anyone remember the mens boutique upstairs at Austin Reed when it was at the end of Chapel Walk .Austins at the top of The Moor used to be a decent men's shop as was S.M.C. shirt shop on the Moor . Bradleys on fargate used to be a good record shop ! Can anybody remember the Roman Room coffee shop on Orchard street near The Sheffield Raincoat Store.
  10. I'm a hospital caretaker at a psychiatric unit ,used to work in a brewery for too many years .Unfortunately it shut down and moved production to Birmingham !
  11. My mate Pete Kimber says that the 4 houses were called ; York,Lancaster,Derby and Chester .Hope that is of use to you !
  12. I seem to remember that when the two Leeds supporters were stabbed to death in Turkey, the defence for the actions was that the supporters had abused the Turkish flag .More than just a coloured bit of cloth in some areas !
  13. my wife worked there from 1967 and used to be a sister there, she seems to remember a sister there called Kitty Turner .Was this your mother? I work with quite a few of the old worksyard lads ,the joiners ,electricians and plumbers e.t.c .If you are interested about the Middlewood site then, where 621 Middlewood road used to be is going to be a medical centre .Behind that there are plans to put "affordable housing" I believe similar to the housing where Kelvin flats used to be . I think this puts the most desirable part of Sheffield into doubt!
  14. I noticed on the leaflet that came with the council tax one little item that wasn't explained anywhere and I wonder if anyone can throw any light on it. The firefighters pension scheme contribution for the year went up from 9.0 million to 11.1 million round about 25% rise .It seems quite a large rise to be made in one year! If pension costs have risen that much in the year why only on firefighters and not on police and other civil servants ?
  15. I've been up to Tinsley golf course this week and some boys have been silly enough to drive a car into the building corner and then set it alight! What worries me is that !.the radio cassette player had been left in the car to burn and 2. the offside front wheel wasn't burnt ! What are the social workers or the probation officers doing by not training these lads up to do a proper job !Surely if they have courses teaching them how to do proper graffiti then surely there's a course showing them what to do when they pinch a car and set it alight ! Perhaps there is an opening for this at a college somewhere -like Successful Twoccing in the three easy stages or Carson the new art expression .
  16. Corporation street baths were at the side of the Brown Cow which is now the Riverside at the bottom of Corporation street. There is a seating area where the baths used to be,they probably shut roundabout the early 1970s I would imagine.Hillsborough baths was were the Deep End is now.I learnt to swim there it was10 yards wide by 25 yards long ,there were also slipper baths there as well .
  17. I believe they called it friedrichs and they also had a shop in Firth Park at the bottom of Bellhouse road .I used to like their polony and roast hocks, and if you bought a joint they always asked if you wanted it dipping.I always said no because I didn't know what they were dipping it in.Talking about the Wicker what's happened to all the pubs ?One left out of about 7 !
  18. I went to see Chubby at Noth pier Blackpool this year £16 .50 for three quarters of an hour not one original joke what a load of b########s .Saw billy Pearce same weekend an absolute laugh three hours for £15 what a difference .You live and learn our own Jimmy Carroll would blind Chubby now.
  19. can anyone remember the La Favorita on Carver street, this was were all the mods used to go.I remember it used to be run by an indian bloke ,one of my favourite drinks from there used to be hot lime ugh !All the Lambrettas and Vespas used to be parked out there and every week the drugs squad used to raid it looking for black bombers and french blues etc .
  20. there used to be a pub in fitzalan square called the Bell was that the one? There was another pub on the haymarker called the Brunswick that was well hard.Another pub near there was the Kings Head on commercial street.
  21. Talking about Beechnut ! can anyone remember the machines that were one penny for a packet of beechnut but if the arrow on the handle pointed towards you,yuo got two packets? We used to sit outside sweet shops waiting for people to use the machine until we got two. Usually we had got our money by taking a tizer,or jusoda bottle back or running errands .I often wondered who got the full biscuits when I only got broken ones! Did anybody else have sugar sanwiches Bread and butter sprinkled with sugar or if we were lucky treacle sarnies I would die if I had to eat one now!
  22. When thatcher came into power on the back of the famous quote "labour isn't working " with 1.5 million out of work then when out of power with 5 million out of work ,she didn't do a bad job did she? In those days any young lad who wasn't quite bright could get a job in the steelworks ,the pit , the railways ,etc and come out drawing a decent wage there was no need for him to go burgling or pinching cars ,he could buy his own! The council estates were steady places to live on ,people knew that there was opportunity to move onto better estates as houses became available then she brought in the right to buy and all the good housing stock disappeared from public ownership .This meant the couple whose first council property was a flat were then stuck there instead of moving into a decent house? True, there were some things she sorted out that needed sorting out but a lot of our current problems can be laid at her feet!
  23. If I remember rightly the Top Rank opened round about 1968 ,Tuesday nights used to be a good night all Tamla and Atlantic music .There used to be a D.J.that came from Radio Luxembourg ,somebody Prince who was quite good .I can remember going to "do's " there proper dinner and dances even doing the March of the Mods and the Valeeta .A lot of groups came there to promote their singles ,when you had to sell a lot to get in the charts! Saturday mornings they used to have a disco for under-16s ,it kept a lot of kids out of bother for a bit ,they also used to have a flea market there on a regular basis. The best night there later on was Thursday night "grab a granny " you had to be really struggling if you couldn't pull in there ! Where do all the married women go now to get a change of scene? The bouncers there were well hard and those steps coming out didn't half hurt your head when they threw you down them! It used to bounce round that area of sheff with the Fiesta ,casino and the Claymore which was only 1 of 2 pubs in sheff that sold Tartan bitter at that time .
  24. i'm sorry to say but i believe ray stuart died either last year or the year before.I can remember him d.jing at the heartbeat on queen's road if my memory serves me well.I also remember Pete Stringfellow having a contest at the Mojo as to was the most frightening Frankenstein and the monsters or Count Lindsay and the Skeletons another Sheffield group round about 1966!
