  1. One of the major problems is that greedy developers are buying up land which has been designated as flood plain for hundreds of years. The land was set aside for a reason, develop the land and the properties built on it will flood, not only that but because there is not enough area to contain the water or if the water is prevented in one area it will find somewhere else to go. Unfortunately nothing will be done to remedy this as most of the developers concerned are financially involved with politicians.
  2. There are some tips & fixes on youtube that may be able to help.
  3. Sounds unlikely to be mice if there is no evidence anywhere else in the house. It could be a nest of birds. Alternatively it could be bats and if it is they are protected and you have to leave them alone. Are there any trees near your house and are there squirrels about, because that is another possibility. The 1st 2 animals are unlikely to cause damage but squirrels will chew through wiring and roof beams so if thats what you've got they need to be outed asap.
  4. We've been to the Genting Club in town for 2 years now and just booked again for this year. £30 per head.
  5. Google the hospital address, it then gives you the option to plan a route which tells you the distance and an estimated travel time
  6. Viners cutlery is made using 'blanks' which have been imported from the far east, and has been for many years. they were the first company to do this and their actions sounded the death knell for Sheffield Cutlery. There are some craftsmen still producing genuine Sheffield Cutlery, but their products are high end with prices to match, as you are paying for hand made high quality and not for mass produced goods. Ernest Wright and Sons are still making scissors in Sheffield and the smaller ones are reasonably priced if you have a few gifts to buy. Hope you manage to find something suitable.
  7. Best chippy IMO Dykes Shoal Chippy, Dykes Hall Road - across from the old Beehive pub (which is now a Tescos). Got The Star award for Best Chip Shop of Year 2015. Cooked in pure beef dripping (which is kept clean and changed frequently) and fish freshly cooked to order. Run by nice folks as well.
  8. Save tea bags - let them dry out and spray them with 'Deep Heat' or similar stuff and scatter them around where the cats tend to go. If that doesn't work for you I got one of these from Amazon and it seems to be working Frostfire Solar Powered Battery Operated Ultrasonic Cat and Pest Repeller (Black). It cost 12.95
  9. I think that some of the problem is caused by the practise of colouring the road red where the pavement dips. This gives some pedestrians the belief that they are on a crossing which confers the same legal rights as a zebra crossing.
  10. Isle of Man - mandatory £1,000 fine if caught using mobile whilst driving
  11. Why would you be frightened of a fox, especially as it was some yards away from you - it was probably more frightened of you!
  12. Follow the instructions given by the RSPCA, but if you've had no joy in a day or so then ring them again. Most cats do manage to get down on their own. Good luck.
  13. Working CCTV cameras would be a help. There are some dotted around, but I know of instances where, when an incident occurs, the cameras are 'not working' or have 'no film in them'. Unless they happen to be trained on the Consultant or Management designated car parks of course.
  14. Firstly, I hope the cyclist is OK. As a child and teenager I regularly rode a bicycle, as an adult I have years of experience as a motorcyclist and a car driver - I have seen good and bad examples relating to all these forms of transport. However as a child I took my 'cycling proficiency' test and my parents would not allow me to ride on the road unsupervised until I had passed it. It seems ridiculous in this day and age, when there is far more traffic on the roads, that whilst it is mandatory for those in cars or on motorcycles to pass a test of proficiency before being allowed unsupervised on public highways, someone who wishes to ride a bicycle can just go into a shop buy a cycle and ride home without any regulation to test their proficiency. In the case of motorcyclists they have to wear protective helmets and yet it is not mandatory for cyclists. Then we get to insurance and vehicle excise duty - again mandatory for car drivers and motorcyclists, but not for cyclists. Surely if cyclists wish to be counted as equals on the road they should have to conform As for the statement that this would discourage cyclists, other road users have to include these costs in their calculations when taking to the road, why should cyclists be exempt from the same regulations that are incumbent on other road users?
  15. Hello. I am hoping to take my grand daughter to try and catch a glimpse of the Queen, next Thursday, but am unable to find any details of the timetable for the visit. The Sheffield Council site just says that the visit is in the morning, and the Cathedral site has even less information. Would be grateful if anyone has more details. Thanks.
  16. Virtually all the shops who buy gold will only pay scrap value, but you could try a local jewellers. You would be better off selling the pieces privately on a site like ebay. Auction is another option, but again you might only get scrap value.
  17. Castleton's nice, plenty of pubs & cafes, craft and other shops, visitors centre with history of Castleton is free. Plenty of walks, caves to visit if finances allow.
  18. The thing that gets me, on this subject, is the people who bag up the dog mess and then throw the bags on the floor or into the hedges of peoples gardens, instead of binning it or taking it home!
  19. Would suggest you report your neighbour via 101 if you felt threatened or intimidated in any way. Also let the environmental health people know about his behaviour. Perhaps a visit from the police will be enough to reinforce the fact hat he can't just ride roughshod over other people. If the police won't visit at least your concerns will be logged should you have any more confrontation with him. Hope you get it sorted, but don't let him bully you.
  20. Bought our Vauxhall Astra Estate new from Pentagon. Vauxhall have 5 years interest free credit + 10 years or 100,000 warranty for 1st owner from new. Can't fault the service we've had from Pentagon. Also they take old car in part ex. Worth checking out even if you then decide its not for you.
