Further 10% cut to local authorities

Recommended Posts

What would be more helpful is if anyone could identify something they personally receive now that they would be prepared to lose in the public good.

That's not an easy question for most of us as the majority of Sheffield aren't in receipt of any of the Labour pet projects that the council employs.

So frankly, I could sit here in ignorance of a wide range of things my tax money is spent on yet have to accept cuts to the Police, social care, and street cleaning whilst the pet projects continue to get funding.

People can point out that 'unnecessary council project 101' only costs 50k a year to run, but that is the wages of 3 to 4 care workers. People who are far more important to the city than the latest fad community project in Burngreave or Parsons Cross in my opinion.

The big "but" is that your employer

Pays in way more than is sustainable :loopy:

Let's hope that stops

Bully for you 10%!!!! And how much does the employer put in ?? And it will be ring fenced and index linked !! Most can only dream of your pension !

I dont know the exact figures of what my employer contributes. Sorry. Also, the terms amd condotions have changed several times in the last 10 years. Considering ive got another 35 + years until retirement I'd guess it'll change a few more times too.

Local Government staff pay into their pensions, always have done.

and the employer (read tax payer) more than matches that contribution

They should be audited EXTERNALLY for efficiency. So many non jobs and people chatting football all day in the public sector. Its beyond a joke really

would it be too simplistic to ask council employees to pay their own pension contributions? i don't know if that adds up to 10% of the budget, but it'd be a step in the right direction.

No problem with that, but to balance this up we would need paying the same wage as people in the private sector.

Is that a deal?

In my particular field, the private sector earn between 10-15% more than our public sector equivalents.

People in my position in the private sector earn roughly 5k more than me, yes, I will gladly trade that for my 'all singing, all dancing' pension!

People in my line of work in the private sector get higher salaries, can get bonuses and every one of them I ask has a better pension than me.
