  1. Can you please provide me a link to the current paying user base of the network? I would be interested to see how many people are using it. As for the buy out, it's not really a "buy out" it's a tender process to find a new operator to replace Thales. All this jumping up and down screaming that the project is making a loss is getting nowhere, this is a massive investment and with the level of advertising/promotion that has taken place I am not surprised there is a slow uptake. I think the problem is that people are cheapskates. They are not willing to pay a reasonable fee for broadband, they would rather pay as little as possible for a relatively poor service. This is a chance for us all to support our local ISP's, local jobs and help them invest further in the local economy. Stop moaning and bleating like The Star and do something to help the situation !
  2. Four kids? I'm surprised you have any time for an allotment!
  3. In that case I would suggest you scrap Sky and come along to Origin for some reet proper Yorkshire Fibre ;-) ---------- Post added 02-01-2013 at 17:27 ---------- I will do that, be nice to see if we can squeeze anything more out of this! Thanks Pete. Phil
  4. I think it's probably the server and the copper loop to my house, it's a new build but I had no end of problems as I think there was a dodgy bit of jointing somewhere. It's still a bit funny, especially when it rains but stable 99% of the time. As an example, here's a couple of speedtest's I just did: http://speedtest.net/result/2408698797.png http://speedtest.net/result/2408706508.png However, if you want investigate and see if I can go any faster i'm happy for you to do that. I'm about 150meters from my cab as the crow flies, no idea of the actual loop length mind you. Sorry if I made it sound like Origin were throttling/shaping the lines, that is NOT the case at all, very happy with my connection and service from Origin.
  5. I'm on Origin Max, speeds vary depending on time of day for me. But this is about average: http://speedtest.net/result/2404008045.png
  6. No fast one, Origin are a provider on the Digital Region network, which is only in South Yorkshire and currently has nothing at all to do with BT. It is Fibre (FTTC, fibre to the cabinet) and should be pretty swift. I'm with Origin at the minute and they have been nothing but brilliant. I would suggest signing up ASAP as they currently have an offer on of free installation and half price for the first three months. http://www.origin-broadband.co.uk/ and http://www.digitalregion.co.uk/ for more information on the network Might also want to look at DRL Forum for a user support board; http://www.drlforum.co.uk/index.php
  7. Why not call the bank's internet banking helpdesk and they can go through it with your wife?
  8. I'm not sure if it was B&B, but do you mean the ex-white building opposite Meadowhall Retail Park, behind Santander? If so, it's being refurbished as it's been taken over by SY Police.
  9. After reading up on the benefits of rabbit poop I am interested. Will you be available Saturday so I can come pick some up?
  10. The council are meant to make regular deliveries of compost/manure? Really? I never saw anything about this in the handbook or the tenancy agreement. I shall get on to the allotment office for a delivery, never seen any be delivered to the Manor plots..
  11. There is, we are in S2 and had a delivery today. I'll find you his telephone number and get back !
  12. For someone who says they've worked in the telecoms industry that's the worst analogy you could have picked. Complete nonsense. As stated by Ghozer, there are many reasons why an end user may not receive the advertised speed. I am not a fan of the "up to" advertising but the problem as I see it is that people need to take personal responsibility for their connection. Research their line length, use several different websites to check distance to exchange, have the line checked for faults, ensure their internal wiring is up to scratch, install a high quality broadband filter faceplate. And they must, MUST read the contract T&C's when they sign up. People just want to blame someone else for their mistakes, work with the ISP and Openreach if needed to and push to get every last ounce of speed out of the line. However, if you want a crappy service from a multi-national company who are trying to control every aspect of the media, and couldn't give a toss about supporting local business then pay off the 12/18 month contract and go elsewhere. Wow, that feels better.
  13. At a guess, I think broadband is mostly sold under the Distance Selling regulations, however once you have used the service (i.e. it's activated and data is transmitted) the cooling off period is removed. "for the provision of services, if the performance of the contract has begun with the consumer's consent before the end of the cancellation period and the supplier has provided the written confirmation and additional information (including information that the cancellation rights will end as soon as performance of the contract begins)" http://www.out-law.com/page-430#Exceptions I doubt you can weasel out under "mis-selling" as the broadband speed is always given as an estimate before activation takes place. I don't know what package you selected but it might be worth while asking if you can move to their cheapest package, which appears to be Ignition @ £17.50/month.
  14. Oh great and glorious God of Sheffield Forum, please bestow the magical ability of "Spelling" upon this individual, referred to under the avatar "Del_Boy".
  15. If you have purchased a key already the Win7 Premium ISO is freely available to download (legally). A Google search for "Windows 7 premium download" gave me a link to the Digital River CDN used by Mircrosoft.
  16. Try this: http://www.origin-broadband.co.uk/availability/ you should be enabled for Digital Region and can switch across and get some decent speeds.
  17. Having been here many, many times I can say i've never, ever had a problem with the service or the food. And why would you want to walk to the bar and get drinks when someone can get them for you?
  18. Why not? They obviously need some better ideas than the current shambles that has been inflicted upon us.
  19. Because the council are plainly idiots. I nearly got caught up in the queue today, luckily I turned around and went another way. How the hell are we meant to recycle more when the most central and easiest to access tip is closed for a good chunk of the week? I would gladly pay a few more quid on my council tax bill if it meant keeping the tips open 7 days a week again.. Sheffield Council - idiots.
  20. If the payment is a "Recurrent Transaction" cancelling the card will not stop it. If the payment is not cancelled by the originator then a "STOP" request can be sent via the bank, but this assumes the merchant processing the payment is compliant with the "STOP" scheme. So, the lesson in all this is do not give your debit card details for regular payments, get the company to set up a Direct Debit instead.
  21. I wouldn't listen to all the people spouting their crap in here, totally irrelevant to your question. Most Visa card refunds are processed by the BACS payment service, this means the payment can take 3-4 working days to hit your account. Your bank will see it at the same time as you, i.e. when it goes in to your account.
  22. I just don't understand why the Blackstock Road site is closed 3 days a week and the others only one day a week? This site is nearly always busy when I go there, stupid decisions like this (which appears to be have snuck in without any real announcements) will increase the already disgusting amount of fly tipping. Not to mention the increased carbon emissions pollution from everyone having to drive their cars further. Instead of a 5 minute journey if I now want to get to a tip it's at least 15 minute car ride. I am just going to break up my recycling in the future and stick it in the black bin, why should I bother making the effort if the council won't? Surely we should be taking these sites back from the sub-contractred-subcontractors and having it as a local governement run basis. I am sick to the back teeth of these stupid, stupid cuts. Just increase the bloody council tax a bit, £10 extra would cover it I reckon, I would rather pay £10 more a month than suffer even more rubbish dumped all over our homes.
