Recently I decided to take the plunge and order origin broadband. On the website and over the phone I was originally advised that on the 40/10 package my speeds should be somewhere in the region of 38/10 Mbps.
My go live date was Wednesday (29/08/12) and I was sent a letter that said an engineer would be required (AM visit), I booked the day off work and waited for the engineer. 2.30PM rolls around and still no engineer, I phoned up Origin only to be told "you're live! There was no need for an engineer visit, you have been misinformed!” A waste of a day but no worries, after a quick look at the logs on the supplied router I could see the error was "Authentication Error", I phoned back to be told that I was using the wrong name and password. After 15 minutes on the phone, miraculously the router connected.
By Thursday morning I was still only getting around 18 down and 9 up Mbps, I phoned up to see if this was just a see if this was just the initial settling period. I was informed that my line was slightly further than they first estimated 1200m, quite a jump on the original 800m! But none the less they should be able to “ramp up the speed” and asked if I could do another speed test later that day. I didn’t get chance last week so, I’ve just phoned back to update them to only to be told that my line won’t be able handle more than 17/10Mbps. I previously had Sky LLU and was able to achieve 16/1MBps and was substantially cheaper. When I asked about the option of terminating my contract as my actual speeds aren’t even 50% of the original estimates, I was told there is no cooling off period.
Does anyone know if I’m able to end my contract early, without massive penalties, through a cooling off period or some form of mis-selling?
