The IKEA in Sheffield thread

Recommended Posts

Sheffield is one of the only cities I have been too where derelict buildings stand in and around the centre. They are a disgrace and any inwould investment should be snapped up with gusto, not sneared at the way SCC seem to do for anything that is not Yorkshire bred.

Funding for large roads projets tends to be allocated on a regional or national basis and it's all taxpayers money anyway, so he would be paying for it.

Maybe the council could dip into their massive reserves to give this project a helping hand ,and smooth the way for massive inward investment into the city ,not to mention hundreds of new , badly needed jobs.

They dont seem to struggle to give planning permission when it comes to betting shops, cash convertors & payday loan shops.

They are everywhere.

They don't have any control. Premises are divided into a number of categories for planning regs. Each covers a number of types of premises. You can change use within a category and not need planning permission. So unless you wanted to open one of the above in premises of another category, the Council don't have a say.

They dont have to grant them a license to gamble at the premises though.

They have control over that.

I very much like the idea of the clones being out of town which leaves the city centre free for small specialist private run businesses.

This could make Sheffield city centre a focal point as every European city is basically the same.

The main thing that puts people off setting up shop is the cost. Market stalls have been given free to start ups in the past for trial periods. Turning TJ Hughes into a small shop incubation centre could lead to better things.
