Received two letters today. One dated in November giving me a £100 fine (£60 if paid in 14 days) and one from direct collection bailiffs Ltd with a fine of £170 due to not paying the first letter which I’ve only just received.

The sign states that you are allowed to park for 90 minutes and I was only there for 87 minutes which is stated on the letter. So I have no idea what the original fine is even for.

How do I go about contesting this, as even if I am guilty which I don’t believe I am. I’m certainly not paying the £170 as only just been made aware of the fine.

Go back, take a photo of the sign confirming a 90 min stay and return it with your letter saying you only stayed 87 mins.

Its not that difficult.

If you stayed 87 mins there is no way you would have got the letter so you must have done something else (maybe not parked in the right bay, failed to register details), so what was it?

Actually it is difficult. If sufcboy sends the photo to the debt collectors, they will ignore it. Debt collectors know nothing about the case and are just engaged to write scary-sounding letters. If instead he sends the photo to the parking company, they will say "sorry, it's with the debt collectors, you must speak to them, not us". When the debt collectors give up and return the matter to the parking the company, the parking company will just say, "sorry, you're outside the 28 day appeal window".  At that point there's not a lot you can do until and if the parking company send you a Letter Before Claim. This is why I suggested sufcboy asks on a specialised forum.

At a guess I'd say either there was a requirement to register you vehicle's VRM at a terminal, which was mistyped or skipped, or there's a "no parking after 8pm" clause or similar.

A couple of months ago I was in the process of being taken to court for a ‘fine’ from 2018 but a really good group on Facebook helped me and the case was dropped at the last minute.

If you use Facebook the group is called Private Parking Tickets - Help and Advice.

As an aside, even if you post on the Facebook group, NEVER identify yourself as the driver.

Correct, use terms like 'the driver did not park' etc. There is no obligation for you to say who the driver was, if you do it makes it a bit easier for them.

Do not ring them. I think it's Highway Parking down there. google them for info. They are members of the BPA.

Money Saving Expert site (private Parking Tickets) are excellent for this, read their dos and donts page.

There is also a 10 min grace period on entry/exit.

They just want your money for nothing, They send pompous looking forms and letters with big red writing, mention 'debt collectors' and 'court proceedings'. It's simply an invoice (they can't send fines) they've sent you hoping that you'll be frightened and pay up.

I've had a few of these PCN's, as said before it's just a invoice, and the reduced "Fine"  is a bribe. There is lots of ways to get out of them, NEVER tell them who the driver is, get in touch with MSE.

Still amazes me that people use this car park. Just don't give them the opportunity to make money out of you.

Just leave an old Christmas or birthday card in you boot and remember to slip it over your rear number plate as you leave.

Pull up as soon as you are out and put it safely away ready for next time.

Bingo. Free parking.

A guy I know tried something like that with his truck but still got done as he was never registered as leaving.    Surly someone would be better covering plate before entering car park

Or, to avoid all doubt, do both. Will depend on what way the cameras are facing on the way in and out, of course.
