Are the people of Sheffield getting fatter?

Recommended Posts

National figures just released for the 2017 travel survey

70% of short trips (1 mile to - less than 5 miles) are done by car. We are the one of the worst in for this in Europe.

Not sure what the Sheffield number is but I suspect its no better than the national figure.

The NHS have had to buy new beds over the past decade or so costing a fortune. That has been done specifically to accommodate the growing number of overweight people there are now. But this is a countrywide problem and not just Sheffield though.

Bariatric beds, commodes, sitting chairs, wheelchairs, hoists, gowns, nighties, pyjamas, XXL cuffs for taking blood pressure ........ the list is endless and very expensive too.

Everyone is getting fatter. It's got very little to do with Sheffield other than the fact that Sheffield is one of the poorer areas of the country and a decade of austerity policies have made many people poorer and so less able to afford a healthy lifestyle/food.

Really?? healthy food /lifestyle is not expensive, unhealthy lifestyle costs way more:roll: its lazy greedy people that are fat, prepackaged carb filled yellow and orange colored food groups.

Exactly so. A healthy diet costs less than an unhealthy one but takes a little thought and effort.

The highlighted words are the problems here I think.

Unfortunately that just isn't true. You can get crap pizzas from iceland for nowt. If you made one yourself from scratch it would cost a lot more. Simply put if you are poor you are forced to eat rubbish and get far more calories from sugar/fat than you ideally want.

Anyway a few more summers like this one and we'll all be short of food due to poor harvests (plus a lack of food imports following brexit ). That should solve the obesity epidemic at least. lets stop pretending everything is going to be ok. it isn't

Obesity has reached epidemic point. I believe it is worse throughout South Yorkshire then other parts of the country. I was in Barnsley the other day and could not believe the size of the, often whole families, waddling around. Looking at people in the market cafes stuffing their faces with chips and burgers, I realised that people simply can't afford to, won't do or can't see the necessity to follow a healthy diet. It can only get worse.

Since when has pizza been a healthy option ?

You really aren't 'forced to eat rubbish' if you are poor. It's just the easy option.

Exercise is the key. If you burn more calories from exercise than you eat you will lose weight - it really IS that simple.

I don't think anyone is pretending that 'everything will be ok' - of course it won't until people take responsibility for their actions - or non actions.

nowt to do with crap pizzas, pizzas are not healthy food, they are a treat or should be, if you are poor and eat cheap iceland pizzas and drink cheap fizzy pop every day or similar you will get fat its pure idleness.

go into any of the cheaper supermarkets Aldi, Lidl or even tescos as they do a basic veg range and you will find cheap healthy and nutritious food if you can be bothered to prepare it and cook it rather than opening a packet and banging it in a microwave or fryer , its very simple:roll: by the way all the italian french and spanish producers of food will still be falling over themselves to export to us:hihi: the sky wont fall in!
