bassett one   453 #1 Posted November 9, 2017 how many people agree with me that south of Sheffield needs a tram,it would help solve woodseats and meadowhead problems and help the people most in need of transport in the south of the city. It could run alongside the railway line or via the reserved track alongside Abbeydale Road/Abbeydale Road South.
 Share this content via...
choogling   15 #4 Posted November 9, 2017 It could run alongside the railway line or via the reserved track alongside Abbeydale Road/Abbeydale Road South.  that stretch of line used to be four lines, up and down fast and slow, it would be very simple in engineering terms to reinstate it and open the closed stations on that route just like it was in the sixties, only problem is woodseats a bottle neck with no easy solution. The unknown HS2 requirements will also need to be factored in.  The closed stations cannot be reopeneded as stopping would reduce capacity. The reason these stations closed was lack of use as they did not serve populated areas- even less now.  Extending from Herdings Park to Norton/Meadowhead/Low Edges is feasable but has been rejected by the Government. If the TramTrain is successful sections could be used but would still require massive investment in street running and overbridges. bean55788   10 #9 Posted November 9, 2017 The Tram System in Sheffield is a joke. It really should have been extended years ago. If you compare it to Manchester’s they have built a system that serves ‘Greater’ Manchester. I understand money is a issue but if your always banging on about green energy you would find the funding and justify it just like they do for transport in London. SYTE and the Government are pathetic and I’m a car driver
 Share this content via...

To suggest that the current areas aren't populated is IMHO wrong.  We have two very congested routes in to Sheffield from the South (A61 & A621) a tram, tram/train extension would be an ideal alternative. However we need a council/ government that is willing to push this forward.
 Share this content via...

horribleblob   214 #12 Posted November 9, 2017 They can't open up the line as they in their wisdom sold off some of the track land to Tesco  easy solution buy it back, knock down Tesco.  Or, run the line in a short tunnel beneath Tesco and build a station there, with a subway travelator connection to Sainsbury, and ask both stores to chip in. I reckon it would be a very popular tram stop.
 Share this content via...
