Advice on alcoholic drunks harassing me/passers by

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, apologies if this isn't in the correct category.

I live on Arundel gate in the city center, and all day and night see a constant array of drunk people drinking 'Orangeboom' (predominantly middle-aged white & black males), and they buy it from the 'Select and Save' 24 hour shop, next door to the Food Stop takeaway next to the bus stop.

I've seen them harass people for money claiming they are on the streets, and then if they get given money they walk into the shop and buy it. If anyone has ever walked down Arundel Street and seen all the beer cans everywhere, 2+2 my friend.

Anyway, everytime I walk down the road to go to my flat, they constantly harass me, become aggressive towards me cutting off my route to my door because I won't give them cash, or recently any items I am carrying. E.g. If I go to Costco, they want an item from a multipack. They also block the front door to my apartment building constantly, just sat there drinking, which is a fire Hazard as it's the only exit, of course they won't care for that.

I know it sounds like a rant, and it is truthfully. However I'm sick to death of them and was wondering if anything could be done. Of course I've told the police but they don't care, it's just another 'complaint' to them. I've talked to the staff in the shop and even they hate serving them, they've got no choice however as it's a franchise, they get told to sell something, they do it.

Another problem with this issue is it's making the street full of litter.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do with the problem?

Ill give you some advice. This is from personal experience. Lifes too short, move. It smarts for a while the fact you have let someone push you out of your home but trust me its worth it. Move, start over without the stress you are suffering now. Your health will thank you for it.

If you are renting then I would advise to move as it won't get better I can't imagine.

Try contacting the management company for the block re them blocking the entrance/exits and see if they can help in the interim. Talk to your neighbours and get others on side to back up your concerns. You or your landlord pay a service charge for a reason.

If you have bought then contact the council or whichever housing association own the neighbouring flats.

Good luck!

If all else fails spike your costco cakes with loads of laxatives and distribute accordingly!

I'd agree with this.

One thing you can never do, or even bother trying is reasoning with someone who is drunk.

Email your local councillors and ask them what they can do about it.

Do they still have the area panels where representatives from the police and council attend? If so, try and raise this there too.

Keep a record of all contact and of all contact with the street drinkers.

Most importantly though, stay safe. If you can avoid times when they are there to bring your shopping in, do so. Or try to avoid going alone.

By the way, is it a public order offence to drink alcohol on Arundel Gate/St? Is this only for certain zones? You could do with finding out. If not, see if the council will make it one, as this might give the police powers to act?

Each time you are harassed, report it on the 101 line.

Even if the shop is a franchise, surely the person serving can chose not to sell them alcohol, if they think they are going to cause bother. They were harassing people the other night when I was waiting for bus.

Wouldn't surprise me if the staff in the shop just serve them in order to remove them from the premises and avoid arguments from drunk people to be honest.

Report it to the police on 101, anti social behaviour.

Get a headcamera and record some of the worse occasions before going to police or council.

Put some of it on youtube with criticism on south Yorkshire police, maybe they will work a little harder for their income at the moment.
