Snake Pass/Woodhead closures

Recommended Posts

So it's not closed at all?

Officially it's open to cars as far as the snake pass inn but in reality you could drive all the way to the top. Not sure if you could get down into Glossop though as I only cycled to the top and back.

Bit pointless having cyclists posting on a thread about road closures when they can cycle most places off road.

Not on road bikes, which are more appropriate for Snake Pass.

The thing that's exciting cyclists about Snake' being close it that due to the traffic it can be a horrible road to cycle along, but for a couple of weeks it's been transformed into a beautiful cycling experience.

the road is actually still open to cars, and tractors, for access to farms and to the snake inn etc, its just not open as a through road to all traffic, before anyone starts wandering and day dreaming of a pleasant little cycle ride. we were at the snake inn and there were people cycling well over the centre of the road approaching some of the bad bends, when there can and will be cars coming back and forth. please ride with care!

Apparently a bunch of skateboarders were spotted speeding down from the summit towards Glossop. It's a pity that some arrangement couldn't be put in place for the road to stay closed one Sunday a year because it is a beautiful stretch of road.

Absolutely, we were saying the same thing last Sunday. A few of us rode all the way across to Glossop, then back to the Ladybower and across to Bamford.

Apart from the small amount of through traffic to the Snake Pass Inn it was amazing. There were dozens and dozens of cyclists of all ages including old couples, one woman riding a horse and several runners. We stopped at the summit and there were loads of cyclists there, the virtual silence was fantastic.

If it was just closed for a few hours on a Sunday morning now and again it would have pretty much zero impact (hardly any traffic at that time anyway) and would really encourage people who are normally far too scared of traffic to get out there and go for a ride.

With all due respect, that the worst idea I've ever read, and I say that as a skateboarder.

The Snake Pass is an important route for many road users. Shutting it off so that boarders/cyclists etc can use it exclusively is daft. There are plenty of other scenic roads they can use, while keeping the Snake free.
