So Corbyn is boycotting the state dinner with Trump, but had no problem attending a state dinner with Xi Jinping in 2015...

Hmm.. one is a rather odious, childish and obnoxious democratically (just) elected leader, and the other is leader of a country that is not democratic, is not transparent and has a deeply, deeply troubling attitude to human rights (to quote Laura K).

Political posturing methinks...

Seriously , what did you expect from him ? If it had been the President of Venezuela ( which one) , he would've been there in a flash

Which Corbyn had no trouble raising with the Chinese leader. This seems to be absent from most of the 'Corbyn hypocrite!' headlines.

Yes , can just imagine the telling off he got :hihi: , and Jinping  sulking  off after being thoroughly scolded .

Maybe he thinks that it would be a more effective statement if every political leader boycotted the dinner except Teresa May and Arlene Foster.

Then why didn't he think that about Xi Jinping?

See how we can go round in circles...

There are two defensible positions that Corbyn could argue. One, that he disagrees with 'rolling out the red carpet' for leaders that have disagreeable records, and so refuses to meet with them or attend state events that they are also attending. Alternatively, he could use the opportunity of meeting them to bring up and confront them on the things that he find disagreeable.

Either one of those positions is fine. He can't however pick and choose and not be accused of political posturing.

His reasonings for refusing to meet with Trump would also be true (and more so) for not meeting Xi Jinping, and visa versa..

Then why isn't he attending the dinner to call out Trump?

He wouldn’t get the chance to. And in any case, Trump wouldn’t listen, or even pretend to listen. The most effective way to call out Trump is to very publicly turn down the invitation.

I’d like to see a lot more of the invitees turning down their invites.
