State multiculturalism has failed, says David Cameron

Recommended Posts

Everywhere you go in England you can see the brilliant success of multi-culturalism- people living side by side, getting on, marrying other aces and living in harmony.

Aren't you confusing a multi-racial society with a multi-cultural one?

We have one, we don't have the other.

People following their religion is a sign of society failing?

Your argument makes no sense whatsoever.

Why are you so paranoid and frightened of muslims? What harm have they done you?

The notion that there’s a problem with ethnic minority communities not integrating into wider British society has become so commonplace among politicians that it is hardly ever challenged.

A succession of government reports and policy initiatives have encouraged the notion that “community cohesion” is under threat, and that the key problem is that ethnic minority communities refuse to engage, preferring instead to “self-segregate” and retreat into the ghetto.

This picture is comprehensively false. Friendship groups are becoming more mixed, not less. Most ethnic minority young people say at least half their friends are white.

Less than 20 percent of minorities born in Britain say they only have friends from their own ethnic group.

If any group is ethnically isolated, it is white people – over half of white people say they only have white friends.

One index of increased integration is the number of people who say they are of “mixed” ethnicity.

The “mixed” group accounts for 650,000 people in England alone and is one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in Britain.

Moreover, surveys of social attitudes going back decades show a steady increase in positive attitudes towards ethnic diversity.

You've posted this.

Nissa Finney and Ludi Simpson from Manchester university – have written a book that comprehensively debunks the myths of segregation. It shows how they arise from misreading the figures and ignoring the real problems of racism and rising economic inequality (see below).

Unlike most books written by academics, Finney and Simpson’s work is written in non-technical prose and structured into short, punchy chapters that tackle each myth head on. It also includes a wealth of material on how to interpret statistics about race, ethnicity and immigration – and how these figures have been used and abused in the past.

“Our aim was to write something in plain English that would get through to a lot of readers,” Ludi told Socialist Worker. “We also wanted to get through to the politicians and journalists who deal with the issues that the book addresses.

“Although I’m now a professor at a university, I spent the majority of my working life at a local council as a statistician in Bradford, which is where I still live.”

Apology accepted, don't call people liars, just ask them politely for their source.

And then you have posted this, championing the interpretation of statistics.

It would seem, the interpretation that best promotes your agenda is the one you like.

Lets have a look at your 'figures'. The ones you use to attack white people by implying they are racist/insular.

Less than 20% of ethnic minorities have friends only from their own ethnic group.

Over half of white people only have white friends.

Most ethnic minority groups say at least half of their friends are white.

First of all, a link to the information would be nice.

Second, your using terms, less, most, at least.

Third your comparing different things. White, ethnic majority, ethnic minorities and specific ethnic minority groups. But without taking into account the amounts of each as a proportion of the population.

I'm not sure of the current ethnic make up of the UK, the census was 10 years ago now.

Lets say it is 85% White British and 15% composed of multiple ethnic minorities. (Lets say 5% Black, 5% White European and 5% Asian)

You'd expect a man with 100 friends to have 85 White British ones, 5 Black, 5 Asian and 5 White European.

Everyone in the UK should have a majority of friends who are White. 90/100 would be the 'expected figure'.

It is the deviations from this figure that should be of concern.

Say you have 1000, 2 from ethnic minority A and 98 from other ethnic minorities B-Z with 900 ethnic majority.

The statistical likelihood of these ethnic minorities/majorities having friends only from their ethnic group, and the deviations from this figure is what should be of concern.

Actually that's not true, one of my clients operates a halal slaughterhouse and his workforce isn't 100% Muslim. It's the intention of most business people to take control of their industry, they're ambitions we generally celebrate in this country. However they cant take control of anything unless there's a market for the goods or services they're providing.

Isn't 100% Muslim, yet!

The idea is, it soon will be, Muslims must dominate the meat trade, at least the trade of meat they eat.

It isn't a business driven ideology to dominate the meat trade that is of concern. It is driven by religious ideology.
