'Persecuted motorists' my arse, motorists are the most cossetted and subsidised members of society, the cost of private motoring has declined over thirty years, the chances of detection for careless driving is almost non-existent.

 

Where do you come up with that gem from? Motorists are targetted everytime to increase money for one scheme or another, where are motorists subsidised? Look at the Sheffield hospitals £1.1 million pound raised from motorists for parking at hospitals. If you speed you deserve to be fined but speed cameras don't catch bad motorists or careless motorists they are there to control speed and make money for local authorities.

Driving a car is a choice. You must be aware it's going to be expensive when you decide to do it. If you're caught speeding you have only yourself to blame, likewise with careless driving. Drive well and stay within the limits and stop whinging.

The danger with this proposed course of action, is that you end up with a system comparable to Ireland (South, not North), wherein motorists do not dare challenge "on-the-spot-convictions" because the Court automatically doubles (at least) the points and sentence if the conviction is upheld.

My £0,02? This is one particular implementation of very many more "stealth taxes" to come over the next few years, in all kinds of manners and ways, to try and balance the now very seriously out-of-kilter Government's books on the quiet (read: "anything but increasing income or coporate tax")

OK. So you think that it is about prevention of speeding. In that case the points system is enough to do this. Once someone has points on their licence they take more care, drive slower I hope you at least accept that!

 

 

So why do not the authorities DROP THE ACCOMPANYING FINE altogether, then the people who think it is a stealth tax can no longer claim it as thus?

Yep, he was on the Mosborough bypass late one night. They'd followed him for about ten minutes then pulled him over for a spot check.
