Why is there a minimum rate of pay?

Recommended Posts

To prevent unscrupulous employers paying their workforce in peanuts/string etc.

I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, but don't think that the current rates reflect the cost of a reasonable living.

I remember when I worked for Oxfam about 15 yrs ago coming across a report from the West midland Low pay unit about pay and conditions in the regional clothing trade. The worst example was 50p an hour and they had to provide their own chair.

I find East Europian workers are better qualifide and will work for a competative wage.

Can we take it then that you're employing East Europeans at less than the minimum wage ?

Are you prepared to risk a £5,000 fine ?

Or are you just a troll :hihi:

I am afraid my friend you have been brought up in a sheltered environment - the UK. The real world out there is not so ' jolly ' as the British imagine sat in their armchair polotics about being ' fair '.

People come here because even a £1 and hour is an impovement for them - and they will work for the £1 as well.

Firstly i am not your friend, i dont think i would ever want to socialise with someone with such selfish views as yourself, secondly, i believe that just because i live in the UK i have not lived a sheltered life, i have travelled all over the world, my partner is from Africa.

So don't try to lecture me about ignorance.

As for the minimum wage, of course there should be one, it will stop exploitation of the working class, something that the majority of us decent caring people regard as...."FAIR"

Yes, i think you have hit the nail on the head, Clifflad has been "bigging it up" about how good the foreign workers are, it seems clear to me that he is perfectly happy to exploit the poor working class, Just remember Clifflad......what goes around...comes around

Poor working class - can you direct me to them. I see them heading for a ' pack of four ' most days. with a fag in their mouth.

Try living in the third world instead of getting all your ideas of the telly.

The minimum wage is laughable for the youngest workers, £3ph.

Most of the time 16/17yo's have to pay the same price as 20,30,40,50,60 yo's for goods.

A lad on my road was barely making £20 working 4 hours a day 5 days a week after taking into account his bus fair and lunch.

If he were on the dole he would be getting £38, rising to £48 at 18.

Why should there be a minimum rate of pay when other countries pay wages the company can compete at in a global economy.

Why should British workers expect this cotton wool approach.

I suppose you'd love to live on £2 an hour, wouldn't you :loopy:

I find East Europian workers are better qualifide and will work for a competative wage. Perhaps people are more interested in working when they have no dole payments. In my opinion miinimum wage should be scrapped and people compete for jobs , this will make UK more competative.

With spelling like that, they're bound to be better qualified than yourself. :loopy:

I think you are living in the victorian times, i think you would hsve made an ideal cotton mill owner, why pay an adult wage when you can get a 7year old boy under the machine to clean it, i also bet that you are anti union as well, its a very selfish point of view that you have, but I suppose that you are fortunate enough to be one of those that does not rely on the minimum wage,

With spelling like his, he wouldn't have been clever enough to own a cotton mill in the Victorian era. Still, I'll bet he'd have made great workhouse cannon fodder begging alongside Oliver Twist for an extra spoonful of gruel.:hihi:

And remember that Tory activist who wanted to be a Tory MP, who bragged to the Tory Conference about paying his workers 83p an hour? Needless to say, he lost the seat he was after.:hihi:
