  1. It's the snow that usually causes most disruption, although do you remember that icy rain we had a few years ago? - That was probably the most scared I've ever been driving my car. I drove down Wilkinson Street at about 5 mph and had to use the kerb as a brake because my wheels had no grip whatsoever. Mrs Doom didn't even make it off the drive that day, she went head over heels stepping out of the house and took the day off as a holiday....A wise decision considering how busy the A&E were at the NGH. Regards Doom
  2. I think you need to see the Alcodoctor. Regards Doom
  3. For me it wouldn't just be the expense, but the storage space. I assume when you purchase a set of 4 winter tyres you keep your existing tyres and therefore need to store them somewhere. I've only got a shed and there isn't enough space in there for tyres. I can understand why people would feel safer with winter tyres, even if they're only necessary a couple of weeks a year, but for me it's not really an option. With the limited amount of snow we have in this country the Autosocks are adequate for me. Regards Doom ---------- Post added 15-10-2014 at 12:17 ---------- I see you've come across Mrs Doom. Regards Doom
  4. You've never watched a film with someone smoking on it? If we're worried about kids imitating what they see, then Tom and Jerry or any other cartoon needs banning from our screens. Regards Doom
  5. I wouldn't argue that some are, but there are some councillors and politicians in all parties involved in criminal activities and holding extreme views. Regards Doom
  6. Which of these policies are racist? http://www.ukip.org/policies_for_people I'm sure you don't agree with some of them, because I certainly don't agree with them all (I'd stick with HS2), but I don't see anything racist about them. Regards Doom
  7. If that's the case it's bonkers, because kids will see far worse examples of behaviour on TV every day. Do we ban them from watching any TV, because they may see someone smoking or a bit of violence between a cat and a mouse? Regards Doom
  8. Isn't the Sheffield Beer Festival down there in a few weeks time? I love the pubs down there, but I've not had a good look around the area for a while. I may have to take a lunchtime stroll down there to see what's new. Regards Doom
  9. Give me a creosoted fence any day. The waft of some tobacco is ok, but some are horrible. Something I've noticed more of these days is what I presume is cannabis, that's quite a potent smell. Regards Doom
  10. I'm a non-smoker and I have to say it's a much nicer atmosphere in the pubs these days compared to the smoke filled rooms they used to be, but this measure seems over the top. There's been the odd time the smell of someone smoking outdoors has wafted in my direction, but it's very unusual and I can't imagine it's a health risk to me. I'd much prefer to see more effort put into dealing with dog walkers who don't clean up after their dogs have pooped....That's disgusting! Regards Doom
  11. I walk past those buildings every day and I don't think I've ever been in. I've always thought they looked a bit grotty, but I'll have a better look next time I pass. Regards Doom
  12. Autosocks for me in the snow. They didn't make an appearance last year, but the year before they got me out of a few sticky situations. Regards Doom
  13. Is it me or does he look like Victor Meldrew in that photo? Regards Doom
  14. Norway are in NATO. Sweden would retaliate with ABBA. Regards Doom
  15. Ideally I'd like to think there were no nuclear weapons in the World, but the problem is if a country like North Korea or Iran decided to nuke London in the knowledge that we have no proper means of retaliation, the billions of pounds shifted from our nuclear deterrent to Hospitals would suddenly seem like a bad idea. I've not actually voted on this, because I'm not fully convinced one way or the other. The popular answer is always going to be hospitals, I'm just trying to provide a counter-argument. Regards Doom
  16. Nuclear weapons aren't going to be used on terrorist groups so it's not going to be a deterrent there. Argentina will have known we weren't going to go nuclear over the Falkland Islands. Where the nuclear option would possibly be deployed is if a country like Russia tried to invade Germany, France or Britain. I've no idea if the reason for the relative peace in Europe is down to the nuclear deterrent or a change in attitudes. What can't be disputed is that since 1945 Europe has remained relatively war free, especially Western Europe......Let's hope it stays like that. Regards Doom
  17. Most of those are internal fights/civil wars within nations. If the nuclear deterrent is the reason we've had no major wars across Europe between various countries, then it's done it's job. Would we have had World War 3 without the nuclear deterrent? - It's impossible to say, but the fact it's now 70 years since the last major war suggests it may have had some impact. Regards Doom
  18. NHS if I need an operation, Trident if those pesky Ruskies want to try and invade us. Since 1945 we've had peace across mainland Europe, how much is that down to the nuclear deterrent? If the reason we've had peace for so long is due to the nuclear deterrent, then I think it's probably a price worth paying.......Let's just hope we never have to use it. Regards Doom
  19. So that's what all those sightings of a UFO were. Regards Doom
  20. You're skint, aren't you? Regards Doom ---------- Post added 14-10-2014 at 11:00 ---------- What was that about? Regards Doom
  21. This appears to be the petition: http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/hindehouseschool The woman on the radio this morning suggested that all the kids of different ethnic backgrounds mixed well together, it's only since the Roma/Slovaks have arrived that the troubles have erupted. I've no idea whether these incidents are all one way, but it is clear they are happening and it's another issue on top of those down Page Hall. The Radio Sheffield reporter did try to get the opinion of a Roma parent, but none were willing to discuss the issue, although one of the kids expressed his thoughts on this. Regards Doom
  22. Until you've actually driven a motor vehicle and encountered a cyclist with no/poor lights, you don't realise how difficult it is to see them whilst driving. Whilst I'm sure the kid in High Green knew he was in the wrong, I bet he didn't realise just how difficult it would be for a motorist to see him, especially with the steady rain we had last night. Regards Doom
  23. Their interpretation of the figures maybe a bit like that, but I believe the figures themselves are taken from the Office for National Statistics. http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/dcp171778_375307.pdf Regards Doom
  24. I'm not all that interested in what happens in mainland Europe, that's for those countries to deal with, what does concern me is reports like this relating to our country: http://www.migrationwatchuk.org/press-release/388 http://www.migrationwatchuk.org/press-release/392 Regards Doom
  25. A course can make them aware of the dangers though. I think some cyclists don't realise how at risk they are and how hard it is for motorists to see them. I did a cycling proficiency course many years ago and it was drilled into us to maintain our bikes and make ourselves as visible as possible. Regards Doom
