  1. I was thinking something very similar. Regards Doom
  2. From my experiences over the years, if you order a taxi to take you out early evening (7 pm) you've got a decent chance of getting a white driver, if you flag down a black cab in town late at night (11pm onwards) 99.5% of the time they'll be Asian/Black. If you try to flag one down at the end of Ramadan be prepared for a fight, because there are so few around everybody else is after one as well. Regards Doom
  3. It's got to be worth £1.7bn of anybody's money just to see Cameron's face when this news was whispered in his ear. Regards Doom
  4. I might like Sainsbury fish, but if I was to find out that 5% of it was bad and likely to cause me illness then I'd probably make the choice to shop elsewhere in the knowledge that I'd probably be safer. If the Jay Report had suggested there was an issue with 1 or maybe 2 Asian taxi drivers, then I'm sure people wouldn't have an issue, but the impression is that it's a lot more than that. The general public will play the percentage game and if they feel safer with a white driver, that is their prerogative and quite understandable. Regards Doom
  5. I've just heard on Radio Sheffield that the EU want another £1.7billion from us because our economy is doing so well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29751124 That would pay for an awful lot of hospitals, schools and roads in this country. If we're the strongest economy in the region, the EU are hardly going to want to stop trading with us because it will only make them weaker. I suspect the 13% opinion poll lead UKIP have in the Rochester and Strood by-election has just increased. Regards Doom
  6. Of course they don't have to trade with us, just like we don't have to trade with them, but it's to all parties benefits if we do trade. Countries like USA, Canada, Norway and Japan all manage to trade with the EU, there's absolutely no reason we can't do the same. It wouldn't surprise me if our leaving proved to be a catalyst for others doing the same, especially as we're one of the major players and a massive nett contributor. Regards Doom
  7. People do realise that if we pull out of the EU there's nothing to stop us still trading with them, just like there's nothing stopping us trading with the USA. Regards Doom
  8. Did he look as scruffy as usual? Regards Doom
  9. I'd agree, but after what's happened I can understand why the general public would be concerned using Asian taxi drivers. I guess it's playing the odds. Whilst someone might think that the vast majority of Asian taxi drivers are decent individuals, if you think there's treble the chance of getting abused by an Asian taxi driver compared to a white one, then why take the risk? From my own point of view I've always found them fine and look forward to my weekly cricket conversation with one of them on Saturday night (now there's a bit of stereotyping, because not all Asians are into cricket ) Regards Doom
  10. Of course it works both ways, which is why you'll find most (All?) UKIP supporters are in favour of selective immigration. You clearly make a valuable and substantial contribution towards our economy, so I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be allowed to stay. I've always said, if we need people from abroad with particular skills in areas that we're currently lacking, I'd be more than happy to have them come over here. It's open immigration that I disagree with. Regards Doom
  11. If they've taken their money over there and are paying their own way then I'm not sure the Spanish would be glad to see the back of them. I would also guess quite a lot of them would now be classified as Spanish and allowed to stay there if we were to leave the EU. Regards Doom
  12. I'm not so worried about the Brits living in the EU, it's the imported votes coming from the EU that worry me. If 500,000+ immigrants are coming in each year, most of whom are likely to vote in favour of staying in the EU, then the longer the vote is delayed, the more chance there is of the pro EU vote coming out on top. I suppose it will depend on who is allowed to vote in any such referendum. If all the Johnny-come-latelies are allowed to vote, regardless of how long they've been here, then it's more than likely the vote will be in favour of staying in the EU, especially if it's delayed a few more years. Regards Doom
  13. I've never been and can't help with the train, but my Brother travels down from Huddersfield every year and absolutely loves it. Regards Doom
  14. It doesn't have to be 56%, it just needs to be enough to tip the balance over 50%. Regards Doom
  15. A quick story about Asian taxi drivers. Years ago me and my mate used to go to the Centertainment for something to eat after watching the ice hockey. We used to both get a separate taxi from the taxi rank that used to be down there. One week, my mate being a very dozy individual, left his Steelers shirt behind in the taxi, although at the time he didn't know where he'd left it. The following week when I was in my taxi going home I got chatting to the driver and mentioned the hockey. I told him about my mate losing his shirt. The driver then reached under his seat and low and behold produced my mates Steelers shirt.....He'd been driving around Sheffield with it under his seat. Like I've said before, my experiences of Asian taxi drivers have been generally very good. Regards Doom
  16. I have to say I feel for you. I regularly get out with my spade and clear the steeper bits of our estate of snow. Afterwards I like to throw a bit of grit down to stop the cleared surface from freezing. If people are willing to help themselves, then it would be nice if the Council would provide them with the tools to finish the job off properly. Regards Doom
  17. I guess it depends on whether the cost saving proves counter-productive in the long term. If removing a grit bin results in lost working hours and accidents, then the overall cost of lost production and/or emergency services may well substantially exceed the saving on a grit bin. If removing a grit bin just means a little inconvenience to the locals, then it's probably worthwhile. Would it be possible to get sponsors for grit bins, like we have sponsors for some of the signs coming into Sheffield? Regards Doom
  18. No reason for Cameron not to have the vote now then. The poll probably reflects the number of Europeans already over here......As more pile in, there will be an increase in those wanting to stay in the EU.....Turkeys aren't going to vote for Christmas. Regards Doom
  19. Toby was on this morning deliberately playing dumb and asking why this was happening. Well der......1,400 cases in Rotherham involving many taxi drivers might point him in the right direction, but he knew that. If people feel more comfortable with white taxi drivers that is their prerogative, it doesn't automatically follow they're some sort of racists. Personally speaking I've never had a problem with Asian taxi drivers, but I can understand why others, especially women and children, might be concerned now. Regards Doom
  20. I'll be voting properly, even though I'm not particularly bothered about the idea of a PCC. Regards Doom
  21. I thought it was going to a language issue. From time to time you do get Asian drivers who don't speak particularly good English, which can make explaining directions hard work. Regards Doom
