  1. One thing I did last year was to start at the Travellers Rest in Apperknowle, then walk back down the hill (via the Miners Arms in Hundal). It's a nice walk, made even nicer by the fact that it's downhill. I'm strongly considering the same approach this year. The one factor I want to take into consideration is the possibility of getting out to Barlow Brewery.
  2. I don't drink their beers anyway on the basis that there are far far tastier beers out there.
  3. How about "You Suffer" by Napalm Death? Also, I submit "Essex is crap" from Spitting Image as the official anthem of the East of England.
  4. The electoral system is not to blame for the Tories electoral failures in Sheffield. The fact that Tories on this forum inevitably end up blaming the people of Sheffield for their electoral failures in Sheffield tells you all you need to know on that score. ---------- Post added 08-01-2016 at 07:53 ---------- Indeed. There is a need for conservatism of some sort in Sheffield politics, but the Tories are just not offering it in Sheffield.
  5. I'm wondering when Rotherham CAMRA are holding their festival at the New York Stadium
  6. Having lived in Essex for 11 years, I could't agree more about BasVegas. It's not a place you'd want to visit. To be honest, most of Essex south of the River Crouch isn't that great (with the exception of Rayleigh). The nice stuff in Essex tends to be nearer to Suffolk than London. ---------- Post added 05-01-2016 at 07:53 ---------- Harlow is on the other side of Essex to Basildon. I've got to admit that I've never really visited Harlow too much outside of going to see one or two gigs at The Square. ---------- Post added 05-01-2016 at 07:55 ---------- You can blame the Luftwaffe for that. ---------- Post added 05-01-2016 at 07:57 ---------- That sounds an awful lot like Frinton-On-Sea in Essex. Except their chippy only opened in 1992 after much protest from the locals. ---------- Post added 05-01-2016 at 08:01 ---------- I used to work in Ipswich and I have to say that whilst the town centre is ugly, it's not that bad overall. Nothing special but I'd rather be in Ipswich than Basildon.
  7. If I felt that HS2 would actually help Sheffield to become a commuter town then I would be all in favour of it.
  8. The Beer House (micro pub at Hunters Bar) is good.
  9. Douglas Carswell is obsessively anti-EU. That kinda makes the Lib Dems a no-no for him. ---------- Post added 19-12-2015 at 09:54 ---------- Carswell is much more intelligent and thoughtful than Farage. He just lacks Farage's charisma.
  10. Thinking about this, Sheffield region includes Doncaster and Bassetlaw. If you live in those areas then wouldn't it be easier to continue to use the high speed rail services out of Doncaster train station rather than trek all the way to either Meadowhall or Victoria for HS2?
  11. In the days when he was a Tory I used to wonder if he was a UKIP plant!
  12. I would agree that UKIP would be much better off with Carswell as leader. However, Carswell knew that UKIP were grumpy anti-immigrant obsessives when he defected from the Tories. That's a big part of their appeal if we are being honest about it.
  13. Technically speaking, Derbyshire Dales are the far west of Sheffield City region. If you ask me, the government's "city regions" have one or two anomalies in them.
  14. East Midlands Parkway is one of the worst train stations I've been in. It's in the middle of nowhere with virtually nonexistent bus links.
  15. When you think about it, Barnsley is in a very good location to reinvent itself as a commuter town....
  16. The one time I've seen a house with a "refugees welcome" sign in the window was in an area with a decent sized immigrant population, which shows to me that your argument is rubbish. On the other hand, I can't imagine people in places like Frinton-On-Sea ever putting "refugees welcome" signs in their windows.
  17. http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/business/business-news/campaign-grows-to-switch-the-building-of-hs2-station-to-sheffield-city-centre-1-7627032#ixzz3uTO0CGbv
  18. I always find it amusing that the most famous thing to have come out of Goldthorpe is Brian Blessed.
  19. The Daily Mail definetly does well out of selling outrage to right wingers. However, this isn't something that's confined to the right wing. As can be seen from the tsunami of anti-Donald Trump stuff that's clogging my Farcebook and Tw@tter at the moment.
  20. Tony Benn was still alive when his son supported the Iraq war in 2003. As to the speech, it might have been a fine bit of oratory, but the arguments were essentially a rehash of the arguments we heard used to justify the Iraq war. If military action in Syria was justified on the same basis as the Iraq war then I would actually be opposed to it.
  21. I liked Nightingale IPA. Let me put it this way, I've had far worse beers made with fashionable hops. The Arbor "Rosie Bomb" was very nice, but I couldn't help but wonder if it would have been better on cask. P.S. Typical isn't it that everyone else from this forum turns up after I'd left!
  22. Went in on Saturday lunchtime. It was VERY quiet (I was the only customer in and the barman kept scuttling off to the office). 6 cask ales (4 of which were from Welbeck Abbey) and a couple of decent keg beers. I do think they could do with some more toilet facilities. Overall it's OK.
  23. Maybe it would help if they made their one MP (Douglas Carswell) the party leader?
  24. Update: Rotherham Town Centre won the award! http://www.itv.com/news/calendar/update/2015-12-01/rotherham-town-centre-wins-top-national-award/
