  1. Fear not! There's a article about Liverpool on page 18 of Sheffield CAMRA's "Beer Matters" http://www.sheffieldcamra.org.uk/Beer%20Matters%20459.pdf
  2. There are Blairites who felt that Brown did just that, although currently they are too busy being angry about Jeremy Corbyn.
  3. As much as I detest Gideon, it's difficult to look past him for this question.
  4. Does Port Street Beer House not count as Manchester town centre? Excellent range in there. You could mention Piccadilly Tap as well (although I'm not nearly as keen on that one personally). I totally agree with you about Barnsley BTW. Although if I'm not sure how Barnsley being in both city regions would actually work in practice.
  5. I don't agree at all. Liverpool's beer scene is well behind Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield. And the less said about the Baltic Fleet the better!
  6. I think Leeds bars tend to be far more "craft keg" orientated, Sheffield caters more for the cask ale drinker and Manchester has more of a variety of different sorts of venues selling good beer. Manchester is even getting a Bundobust (which is something we could do with in Sheffield) http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/food-drink-news/bundobust-open-manchester-craft-beer-10204628 ---------- Post added 26-11-2015 at 13:06 ---------- Also, it appears that Wikipedia has Barnsley in both Leeds and Sheffield city regions!
  7. It would appear that York is being lumped in with Leeds City Region here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_City_Region ---------- Post added 26-11-2015 at 12:41 ---------- Whilst Leeds beats Sheffield all hands up for shopping, I don't think it's a better place to go for a drink. However, the article in the OP isn't comparing Leeds and Sheffield, it's comparing Leeds and Manchester.
  8. The infighting will most likely stop when you have a leader who can unite the warring factions. Trouble is, neither side is showing any sign of wanting to work constructively with the other.
  9. The problem with this theory is that if anything, the sectarian infighting in Labour has got even worse since Corbyn was elected. Labour just look totally dysfuntional at present.
  10. Despite the cringeworthy rhetoric, there's a few good ideas going about with this "Northern Powerhouse" gumph. Although at the same time there are moments when it seems to involve ideas from people with no knowledge of local history and culture, and worse still, no understanding of basic geography. The biggest issue I have is with the city regions. Evidently, an elected mayor for Sheffield won't just be for the city itself but also for Barsley, Rotherham, Chesterfield, Doncaster, and even Derbyshire Dales and Bassettlaw! I'm not sure that people in places like Dronfield really want their local government controlled from Sheffield rather than Chesterfield & Matlock. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_City_Region
  11. Because the alternative was one of Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall. ---------- Post added 25-11-2015 at 12:52 ---------- That pretty much hits the nail on the head I'm afraid. And it's a major factor in the open civil war currently engulfing Labour.
  12. The problem with this article is that it isn't very good. For one thing it's not well written IMHO. And serves as a reminder of all the L**ds stereotypes that make the rest of Yorkshire dislike the place. For another, the evidence used is extremely disingenuous, relying on "Leeds City region" which includes West Yorkshire and a large swathe of North Yorkshire rather than just L**ds itself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_City_Region Also, the portrayal of the BBC as the "Manchester Marketing Board" when they are responsible for a local TV news show referred to derisively across the county as "Look L**ds" does come across as being grievance-mongering for the sake of it.
  13. Which brings us to another point, which is how aware (or not) most people are about what all this "northern powerhouse" stuff actually means. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-34787669
  14. Currently one name being mentioned is Dan Jarvis, MP for Barnsley Central. Although I would expect it to end up being a Sheffield Labour insider. http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/oct/27/labour-elected-mayors-northern-england ---------- Post added 18-11-2015 at 12:42 ---------- I'm not sure I'd want to have local public services in places like Dronfield controlled from Sheffield instead of Chesterfield & Matlock.
  15. Doesn't help when David Cameron has a majority of 25,155, which makes his seat extremely safe. The sort of thing that can make a politician complacent and take people for granted. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witney_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
  16. That's the thing for me. If you live in Witney then surely you expect better than this from your MP?
  17. ...Places where people might not necessarily want to be lumped in with Sheffield.
  18. Shefield City "region"? Haven't we already got the county of South Yorkshire? It all looks very wishy-washy and vague.
  19. A visit to the Wellington pub on Shalesmoor tram stop will cause you to alter your assessment.
  20. Would it be even more hipstery if served in one of the drinking horns on sale upstairs? http://vikingdrinkinghorns.com/
  21. The North Riding Red Citra is in the marquee. If it's still on it's the beer that really stood out for me.
  22. You can always boycott businesses that support the Tories if you happen to be that way inclined.
  23. I'm preferring porters and stouts myself at the moment. If it's well made and tasty then so what if it's "behind the times". Agree about the Ship though. It's OK but it's not going to tempt me away from my preferred Kelham Island drinking venue of Shakespeare's.
  24. Hang on, it that a Steel City gose that isn't called "Get In The Sea"? That can't be right!
  25. Portman Road is slap bang in the middle of the Ipswich red light district. The area was cleaned up a lot following the murders. It just grates that it took the deaths of 6 women for that action to be taken.
