  1. £20 extra rent for not using a bedroom YET Sheffield Homes put (dare I say It ) a single male asylum seeker In a three bedroom maisonette. Yes its true. wheres the fairness in that.
  2. They are on sale in the Millenium Gallery, they are with the books.
  3. The siren enabled everyone to check their pocket watches, clocks etc to make sure they were correct, H.L.Brown had the same set up in Doncaster. You have to remember not all clocks & watches were good timekeepers so the one o`clock signal helped. Many factories in Town used this siren as a reminder of the correct time. I cant understand why people cannot work this out for themselves.
  4. Ive never heard anyone call them Dripping BREADCAKES, Dripping Cakes yes.
  5. In its life it was a Berni Inn, but if you look at the location its in, it will never make money as an eating house, perhaps when the Market is demolished and depending on whats going to replace it maybe but as it it stands now its a big NO!
  6. I thought you had to retrieve your luggage by 22:00?
  7. So their coaches were stuck in the White Bear at Ecclesfield and in various pubs in and around the city?
  8. Seems everyone is to blame except the fans that turned up late and without a ticket.
  9. This accident was bound to happen, I feel sorry for the boy but why was he on his own near a very busy road? I watch children daily run or ride bikes across Leighton Rd without looking and never a parent in sight. Its a miracle the boy wasnt killed.
  10. In two days ive captured three large spiders in my home and put them outside. Yesterday there was a knock at my front door, I answered it and it was the three spiders back and they threw me out!!
  11. I agree with you wholeheartedly, I buy a Sheffield paper to read about Sheffield News, not Barnsley, Chesterfield, Rotherham and other towns. The news isnt news in the Star, its just so bad, items about committes, societies and so forth. The Court report is short & terse, there is no in depth report about court cases or things that do matter to Sheffield. I still buy the Star hoping that to-day it will be like it use to be.
  12. It use to park across from the Wyvern, it was quite handy seeing as Newfield Fisheries didnt open much at night.
  13. Sorry but thats just greed, nothing to do with the smoking ban
  14. A lot of you are missing out an important event, 1066 and the subsequent Magna Carta. When William took hold of England he ordered a stock check of what he had won throught the Battle of Hastings so he sent assesors round the country with scribes, all the assesors & scribes were French, so a lot of place names were written down as heard not what the real name was, so Escafeld sounded like Sheffeld to the french. This is what I was taught in my further education about the history of Sheffield. It may not be true but who can say.
  15. Just ignore these cretins, breast feeding is the correct way to feed new born, when A babe is hungry you feed him/her where ever you are. I dont kinow when womens breasts stopped being a feeding station for babes and now they are a sex thing, unbelieveable, I cant understand why people think its disgusting to do what comes naturally and yet they put up with filthy language thats spoken everywhere by children ,teenagers, mothers & fathers and grandparents.
  16. Why kill them? bees are on the decline and without them there would be no flowers, fruit ect. Bees dont sting willy-nilly unlike wasps, I know it may sound daft but just try to make your little girl aware of them as would hate for her to be stung.
  17. OsgaTHORPE, HackenTHORPE, WoodTHORPE,are just a few indications of the Viking presence in Sheffield, Thorpe is a Viking name for Farm or Settlement.
  18. It was filmed all over, one episode was done at the Myrtle Inn on Myrtle Rd now sadly gone, another was done up around cemetery Rd,another episode had a works outing in it and the works entrance was Chestermans on Pomona St thats still there. The cast was Liz Smith, John Comer, Robin Bailey, Bert Palmer played Uncle Stavely first then he was replaced by Leslie Sarony an old Music Hall star,Liz Goulding played Carters Fiance and Carter was played by Steven Rea who went on to stardom as a big Film star. One of the best eries I ever saw and Robin bailey played a Yorkshire man like a natural. But getting back to where it was filmed it was all over Sheffield
  19. Sismans in the Wicker a family run shop and supplies everything electric from a 3amp fuse to a household juke box.
  20. I got the info about the Who Can Tell from History Sheffield which is very reliable.
  21. It was named after a Racehorse that won the 1894 Grand National, it was ridden by a Jockey called Gatland and was owned by Mr J Widger
  22. It makes me angry because all you have to do is ring the number the receptionist answers, you state why youve rang, she puts it up on screen and its done so why prolong a call with an 0854 number? to make cash thats all, before they reinstated the old number it took up to four minutes to get to speak to the receptionist "your calls important to us" while the cost to you is getting higher and higher. If you can afford to pay for 0845 numbers thats o.k. but there are plenty of people who cant.
