  1. Handelsbanken are in the North, they have a branch above the crucible corner and one in Barkers Pool. I agree Metro Bank would be a good shout though - certainly not for everyone but would be a nice option to have for those it suits - like Handelsbanken in that respect.
  2. As someone who's worked for a bank for a while, and still works within financial services: 1) Some banks will transfer a client's sort code when they close the branch at which they are domiciled. Natwest, has on occasion (and quite recently to my knowledge) done this. It doesn't usually cause a problem as they essentially inform everyone, however sometimes it does go wrong, and payments will bounce - which is why it's important. 2) Standing orders do tend to ask for bank branch addresses - especially when said SO is being set up by distance, or is sent in by the company (usually charity now) it's set up to pay. Realistically, it's then sent to scanning for electronic upload and storage from the branch in question, but it's still something that is done more often than not. DirectDebits on the other hand need less info about the payee, as the debit is controlled by the recipient - occasionally they use the request for bank info as a security check, as this is something that unless you memorised a sort code book you wouldn't know from looking at a bank card, unless you shared a sort code. 3) Generally if a bank closes they have a set period of time they have to provide the new branch contact to their customers (i.e. those domiciled at that sort code) Off the top of my head I can't remember if it was 60 or 90 days though - although I believe it's the former.
  3. they obviously think that residents on there are less likely to use it! >.< (and for reference I live on one of those, and fully intend to make use of at least four of those shops I struggle to get to normally)
  4. Number 1 is the closest to get you to the church - stops at High St, Pinstone St, Bottom of the Moor in town. goes right up Norton Lane. 1A does not - it turns off Blackstock Road onto Constable road, so you still have a fair walk from there. 20 will stop at top entrance to Graves Park, and you can walk through the park, past the animals, fishponds and back out - wouldn't recommend the 18
  5. I would suggest splitting some of the larger postcodes up - certainly S8 (which I've lived in for over twenty years now collectively) as not only are there a lot of things to see/do, it's also huge, so your two to four hour trip would never fit multiple things in! There was also a couple of students who last year visited all the parks in Sheffield which was really interesting reading (they did a post about each one on a twitter feed) - we have a lot of parks! Might also be worth considering when the weather improves some? also, what things do you class as interesting? Spaces, architecture? Museums? To do things? Quirky shops? etc.. etc... might help with suggestions for you.
  6. My great grandfather worked for wigfalls and did sing in the clubs as well - his name was William (Billy) Butler
  7. In an attempt to bring it back on topic!!! There was a comment further back about evenings- when I lived in Newcastle, they launched their evening city centre strategy to try and win some business back from the out of town Metrocentre (sounding familiar here... ?) the thing that made it successful was they planned it, and most importantly, communicated it and communicated it well! They also made the decision to commit to it, consulted with the retail outlets and made it into something! They launched with a series of events, not unlike alive after five (I think theirs was actually called late until eight but I might be mistaken!) but they kept the momentum going... and within a year, it was popular to shop in the centre after work again! Something that unfortunately the bods at the council are not capable of. Newcastle centre is now open until 8pm each evening - not every shop opens every day until 8pm - the banks (which I was working at at the time were generally open until 6 with one or two nights until 8pm)... It's certainly not impossible, and a bit of a neb around will see they weren't the only place to launch a successful initiative, but again, that would involve research!! It does really frustrate me as this could be such a good thing... if only someone who had a clue actually took some responsibility and took charge! That said, The building work is definitely starting to come along, so that in itself is actually somewhat encouraging...
  8. Oddly enough teh Durham Ox was converted to student flats before becoming the site office to build...more student flats.. having been inside when my friends lived there, it needed work, but was by no means unfeasible. strange it was left to fall into such disrepair really.
  9. it does, yeah. I will ping you something across soon - I'll gather a couple of links together from various places and some info, Can't promise it'll be today or tomorrow, as dealing with the aftermath of a crime at the moment(!)
  10. commenting as a reminder to myself. I'm considering getting back into the scene.. just watched the video
  11. Now were're back in the olden days! Little nippers are the ones I always remembered... then came the bendy buses.
  12. Meadowhead Meats - proper local butcher, makes his own, very high meat content, has a sausage of the week as well as the regular ones - currently sage and onion. I'm fussy about sausages - but never had any issue with Mick's
  13. You can still get ants climbing a tree there, but since the old chef (who was much more traditional/authentic chinese in his cooking left) people wanting properly authentic food have gone elsewhere - you still get a lot of Chinese people in there though - I last went about a month ago on a saturday lunchtime with my best friend who was visiting (we went to uni together when the old chef was in, she's Chinese and we used to go semi-regularly) and whilst we were disappointed the menu choice had mostly changed, the food was still good.
  14. Cross purposes here... Netto is danish. Aldi (both) and lidl are German. However bratwurst is good from both the ones we have left. I'm currently in Denmark so enjoying some Danish pølser
