Do You Need The BBC?

Recommended Posts

Right, thank you.

We are finally getting somewhere.

So just to be clear, you both think that it is much fairer for the licence fee to be scrapped in its current form and the relevant elements to be funded out of general taxation (with inevitable increases) which will affect the entire taxpaying population (whether or not they even use any broadcast services).

.....very interesting.

If the BBC TV licence fee was funded as part of the income tax system, for example, it would be much fairer. It would then be a progressive tax, based on the ability to pay. As people on low incomes do not pay income tax if they earn less than £11,850 per year, the poor would be taken out of paying for the BBC entirely. The wealthy would then subsidise the poor, instead of the other way round which the BBC prefers.

At the moment the BBC TV licence fee is the most regressive tax in the UK, which has the poorest in society subsidising the entertainment choices of the wealthy. But more and more people are refusing to pay. The BBC states that 6% of properties in the UK that should be licenced are not licenced. This means over 1 million households in the UK do not pay the licence fee but should. Then we have the legally licence free households, such as mine, who have switched to non-live broadcast viewing...

The BBC remind me of what British Leyland was like in the 1970s - outdated with an uncompetitive model. The quality of their product is poor compared to the global competition.

Yes I like the BBC especially.

With British teenagers recognising the name ‘YouTube’ more than they do ‘BBC’, and Netflix spending more than £6 billion on content last year alone, the BBC simply can't compete with voluntary subscription funded entertainment producers.

Tony Hall, BBC Director General, has stated: “Major new entrants such as Amazon and Netflix have meant that the global media market is increasingly dominated by a small number of US-based media giants with extraordinary creative and financial firepower".

This 'extraordinary creative and financial firepower' is funded by people voluntarily subscribing to these organisations, unlike the BBC which is funded by a compulsory, heavily enforced tax on anybody who watches live television.

Netflix and Amazon have a voluntary subscription model of funding in place fit for 2018.

The BBC has a compulsory TV licence fee model of funding in place fit for 1978.

The old fashioned, out of touch BBC simply cannot compete.

Both of which provide only a fraction of that provided by the BBC.

Remind us again how much politics, opinion, news, local news, current affairs & radio coverage both Netflix and Amazon provide?

It's why the BBC is way ahead of other news sources when it comes to levels of public trust and perceptions of accuracy and impartiality.

http://natcen.ac.uk/blog/the-bbc-still-dominates-when-it-comes-to-news-online-heres-why-it-matters

and why the BBC is more trusted globally than local news providers.

While there is a counter-argument that online news content could create a more vibrant and diverse democracy, the BBC can be seen as a guardian of competing perspectives. Indeed, this has led some to argue that the US needs an equivalent to the BBC to improve their democracy.

The old fashioned, out of touch BBC simply cannot compete.

The BBC produces content for both Netflix and Amazon :P According to YOUR recent sources, the BBC viewing figures over the XMas period dwarfed all other broadcasters :suspect:

I guess they're not that out of touch afterall.

Weren't you up in arms about pay discrimination at the BBC a while ago?

I guess like everything else you claim to be concerned about, depends who's doing it :hihi:

Both of which provide only a fraction of that provided by the BBC.

The BBC TV licence fee pays for nine national television channels (BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC News, BBC Parliament, BBC Alba). The online only BBC THREE. Ten national radio stations (Radio 1, 1Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, Radio 4 Extra, Radio 5 Live, 5 Live Sports Extra, 6 Music, BBC Asian Network). Over forty local radio stations. The vast BBC Online Internet platform. The BBC World Service.

And many other things which do not have any benefit for BBC TV licence fee payers living in the UK.

All of which is evidence of a sprawling, massively expensive to maintain empire building programme. While the quality of BBC content has gone down, the number of things the BBC does has risen. Coincidence?

Netflix, in comparison, focuses on creating and delivering very high quality, diverse television content to its customers at an affordable price. Payment by voluntary subscription gives Netflix 'extraordinary creative and financial firepower', according to BBC Director General Tony Hall, which gives it superior spending power over the BBC.

A BBC TV licence today makes as much sense as a nationally funded coffee chain.

How many coffee chains have unparalleled levels of public trust and perceptions of accuracy and impartiality in their news coverage?

The BBC is paid from the public purse.

Netflix isn't.

What Netflix privately pays its staff is a matter between Netflix and it's employees. What the BBC pays it's staff, and the pay discrimination it has always operated but fought tooth and nail to keep secret, is a matter of great public concern due to 'the unique way the BBC is funded'.

As you keep telling us, you don't pay the TV licence fee so it's not compulsory, is it? Any other false truths you'd like to regale us with?

To be fair, he is in tune with the zeitgeist.
