Husband losing £6000 per annum as company stopping on call

Recommended Posts

He was told that it wouldn't end. What he did wrong was trust his employer. In hindsight he should have taken the promotion.

Yes we have already considered the options mentioned. In regards to adjusting spending, unfortunately we have certain outgoings that have to meet regardless, we cannot cut back on those. Which is why looking for another job and me getting a job is something we have thought about.

His manager should be in again today, so he is going to see if he can sort something out.

I think from the legal viewpoint, as it is not in his contract and he has not letter stating the t&cs of the extra payment, then I think he would almost certainly be able to claim custom and practise for the amount of time but it is difficult to prove and he would need to go through company internal procedures first (otherwise and potential award would be automatically reduced). However, they are giving several months notice of the drop so they would argue that they are needing to impose for business purposes (ie lowering costs). If you ever went to tribunal with it, I think a lot would depend which side of bed the judge got out of and whether he had an argument with the wife or not :)

Speaking with the manager is the right step. If not next step would be put in place a formal grievance. Need to ensure that all the background that you have stated is in the grievance in particular about refusing other job because didn't want to leave the section etc.

At this point I'm out. Thank you to the people who tried to offer advice, it's is much appreciated.

As I'm sure you most of you can understand my stress levels are a little on the high side right now. Taking abuse off random people is not what I need. Normally I wouldn't rise to a troll but its hard not to. I just hope calling us dumb has made you feel better. Maybe it has even made you feel superior, unfortunately for you you are not. You are a bully.

Best of luck with it. Can you come back and let us know the outcome once it's all sorted as I'm very interested to know the legal status of things like this as it might affect me in the future too.

I'd suggest a chat about it with his manager, explain how you relied upon the money and were told it wasn't going to end, so considered it part of his job package. With the money gone, could the firm understand it's let him down and make an increase in base salary to help cover the loss of being on call.

You might (won't) get a 6k pay rise, but you can have a go at negotiating something in between 6 and zero. If nothing comes out of it, then look for a new job, and hand the notice in. Plenty of jobs going at the moment in IT in Sheffield, especially with Sky seemingly hoovering up leaving everyone else at the mercy of the market.

I wish you luck. But what this does point out is that an IT professional in Sheffield with 18 years experience earns £21k! This is pretty awful pay and shows how unrewarded Sheffield employees are or what tight **** our employers are. Even at a low level, with 18 years IT experience someone 100 miles further south would be earning double this. And a lot more than that with a speciality IT role.

And they do here with a degree, you know his employment details?

IT is a rather broad job description. Some things presumably pay more than others? I don't think you can compare "IT" jobs, only specific sub specialisms within IT.

I was going to say, there are PLENTY of IT jobs in Sheffield over the £30k mark and quite a few over the £40k mark if you have the skills they need.
