Leeds - Actual Capital of the North?

Recommended Posts

Maybe the reason we mention the moor is because it is the only little place where a little bit of development is happening.

The rest of Sheffield centre is asleep.

In terms of retail it's the only development the centre has had for decade it's a small piece of the jigsaw that the council haven't even bought yet. To say the rest of Sheffield centre is asleep is missing all the residential and offices being built in the centre, during the summer we had 4 or 5 cranes in the skyline.

Leeds is the third largest city in England , Sheffield is forth & Manchester is about 7th behind Bradford .

That's a load of rubbish

What Dutch is saying (and I agree with him) is that you walk out of Leeds station and there is something immediately in front of you to go at. Namely Trinity, which connects to Briggate and Headrow. With Sheffield that isn't the case as it's hampered by geography. Your only link into the retail / theatre / restauarant / bar section of town is a hike up Howard Street or a tram to Cathedral / West Street. Neither of these give immediate access to the Moor. So if you want to get visitors from out of town to the Moor you need a direct transport link.

I know people will say 'go across to the Howard and jump on a bus there', but seriously how many out of towners would know this? It needs fixing. or the Moor, and the Retail Quarter will fail.

If you don't believe this answer one question, why did developers go ahead with the development of Trinity and the Victoria Qtr in Leeds but left Sheffield to rot? Because they knew this to be true. Simple.

So basically the complaint is that the train station is in the wrong place.

Perhaps we can somehow just teleport it to Fargate?

It is not a complaint. It is a simple fact and explanation why Leeds is more likely to be a capital than Sheffield.

If you are upset, perhaps you should travel to leeds by train and enter the city with a stopwatch and notebook and record what you can access in leeds in 30 minutes.

Then come back to Sheffield and do the same and compare the results.

Edit: you probably lose 10 minutes just waiting for the tram and pay for using it.

Let me put it the way I see it.

The moor:

Indecent parking.

So what exactly is "indecent" about the parking?

There's plenty of parking at the Moor, four mulita-storey car parks immediately off the Moor and several surface level ones nearby that charge £3 for the full day. So, parking is plentiful and cheap.

well after a great day in Leeds yesterday i can honestly say that Sheffield can never compete untill the council stops wasting money on white elephants, moor market, wsgames, new retail quarter etc etc and start investing in what people actually want! yesterday 4 of us spent over £3000 in shopping and eating and drinking in Leeds what a refreshing change to sheffield, covered shopping , clean walkways, abundance of stores, bars, restaurants, easy access from the station right into the main shops, the Headrow, the Light and Trinity areas, very little sign of chuggers there were one or two but not agressive like fargate, the other difference was that the place was still buzzing at 8pm unlike sheffield which closes pretty much at 5.30, look forward to the next trip sorry sheffield you just dont cut it! anyone that says otherwise havent been to a decent city shopping centre.

We have many friends who drive and none of them like to park at the moor but they rather park round west/division street areas. They don't like them multi storey carparks.

Sheffield is a topper in arts, presentations, education, culture and many other things.

Sheffield is great, but not a capital
