It seems our attitude towards alcohol and the effects of it are getting worse. Its seem almost good to go out and get absolutely smashed drinking as much as possible.

Is it about time we sorted did something about our attitude to drinking too much, been drunk and disorderly e,c,t. Possible towards the way its advertised and shown on tv and the laws regarding licencing?

Over drinking causes unnecessary problems for Police & Paramedic's not to mention everyone else. It is also obviously no good for our health.

Should there be more drink awareness campaigns and become more stricter with the laws for drunk and disorderly offences?

I think a charge for being taken to A&E and such is fair enough.

Obviously if you're injured or have been attacked it's a different matter, but if you've drunk so much you've fallen asleep in the street, messed yourself and ended up being taken for a stomach pump then you should expect a charge.

The news, especially this time of year, typically shows streets filled with young people staggering, vomiting and fighting. after a night out. And yes that does need to be attended to - whether that's by the police or medical crew will depend on the nature of the presenting problem.

I think there is a huge hidden problem of alcoholism that needs to be addressed. For many alcohol is a way of coping with difficulties in their lives, so they can function - but for others it's a way of seeking oblivion.

I don't pretend that solving these issues will be easy. It has often been said that the English do seem to have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol though....Hogarth's paintings of London centuries ago bear that out. Whether our relationship with alcohol is any more dysfunctional or different than Mainland Europe or America I don't honestly know.

The worst thing they did was to have almost 24 hour drinking allowed. Bring back sensible pub/club laws, it will change things for the better.

I think that's a complete myth. How many establishments actually are open 24 hours.

You will find that most normal pubs close around 11.00pm with extensions maybe till 12.30-1.00 on weekends. Most of the main nightclubs still close around 2.00-3.00 despite the law changes.

I can only think of a few establishments that have an "all nighter" and they are the type of venues that would have carried on regardless legally or illegally. Other than that, a couple of casinos have 24/7 opening but I doubt they are the type of places where mayhem will develop.

What has changed in the trend to go out and get drunk. The purpose solely being to get drunk. The ability to purchase discount alcohol for pre-loading at home prior to going out.

I would be interested to see how many people who are sprawled about on West Street or rushing into A&E to have their stomach pumped have been purchasing drinks in the bars vs how much they have already consumed at home prior.

I was the under the impression that staggered kicking out times actually reduced the amount of violence and problems late in the evening.

Is there any evidence that it increased the level of D&D?

Ok, fair enough but I did say a "few" establishments are an exception to the rule.

However, I don't feel that they are the majority. Most of the main bars, pubs and clubs are usually all closed up by 1.30-2.00. Many of them mid week are closed up by 11.30-12.00. It still does not seem to be the case in my observations that extended opening times has been the cause of the issue.
