Might be time to invest in a new hard drive:

PC World for local collect:

More choice and better price from Ebuyer though:

Always a good idea to refresh every couple of years, especially if it stores a lot of treasured files.

And you can copy the contents of the old drive to the new.

Why would he buy a new drive when he has nearly 200gb free in his actual pc? :loopy::huh:

I have 411gb free on my system drive but I still use a second drive for my files etc & I have a drive to back that up onto. I prefer my system drive just to be the OS and applications with all the data stored on the 2nd drive. That way if something goes badly wrong with the OS to the point that I need to wipe it and start again my data is untouched.

Why is that loopy? Keeping data on separate drives is entirely sensible. One drive fails and you lose the lot unless you keep a backup. I have two SSDs in my main machine and a RAID 5 fileserver. Should I not do that, would I be better with a single drive in one machine

do you keep additional backup copies of your data in a different location?

If you don't know what you are backing up, then what's the point of backing anything up in the first place?

No point unless you have blind faith that anything worth backing up is being backed up.. buying a bigger external drive to backup useless files such as the contents of your System directory yet ignoring your documents and photographs is a total waste of money.

RAID isn't a backup.

I haven't the foggiest, that's why I'm asking. That's why I said that I wasn't 'entirely sure' in my original post, asking for advice ... it doesn't seem to make sense. I know nothing about computers. I know a lot about other subjects. I certainly wouldn't laugh at people if they asked me for advice on say, portrait painting, cabinet-making, wood carving, car restoration etc.

I am asking for advice here ... fine by me if you wanna laugh though.

which is why I asked what do you save on the external? you have only 10gb on an external harddrive yet nearly 200gb on your internal one? I would say move your not so important stuff back to the internal one to free up space on the external one.

but if you think thats me laughing at you when logic is already in something that you wrote... so be it..

You are of course correct.

Thanks to Paul Blade, who came round and looked at my computer last night and this morning, it is now working properly again! He also took the time to explain to me how things work, which I now understand.

He explained to me that my external hard drive is practically useless at 10gb and that an average memory stick is now capable of holding around twice as much. I'm flabbergasted that something so small can hold so much information!

Also that I don't really need an external, but if I do, to get something along the lines of 1 or 2tb. I'm also going to install a new internal drive once I've worked out what I need (Sisoft Sandra lite). Having said that, I've got 200gb free.

I apologise for having a go at you, I thought you were calling me thick. I learn quickly though when things are explained to me properly ... just an hour of tuition off Paul, and I understand the technical side of my computer so much better ... something I've never looked into before. Still got a way to go though! :)

A big 'Thank you' to Paul Blade!
