0742Sheff
South Yorkshire Police said the removal of the helicopter service would save it £668,000 per year. I thought it cost a LOT more than that per year. You would have thought a police force the size of ours would be able to fund it. It isn't just a few arrests we will be losing. It is the threat of knowing a helicopter was a few minutes away from you if you were going to commit a crime.
Andy
I suppose getting rid of our own helicopter won't save the full cost of operation - we'll still have to contribute towards the helicopter that cover's South Yorkshire.
Stamen
The copper chopper does a lot to reduce crime. It has been an excellent servant to Sheffield and it will be sad to see it go. But Nick Clegg will come to our rescue yet again!....LIKE HELL!
algy
From what I can gather it's not South Yorkshire Police's idea, it's good old Dave who's decided there should be one police air service covering the whole country to save money.
crookesey
Will we now get posts asking "Why is there no police helicopter over our house?"

My son's best mate is an RAF Puma pilot, it cost £2million to train him. I only ask because I wonder what you do with an unwanted helicopter pilot. Nagel
There was less crime before the introduction of police helicopters.
