splodgeyAl   10 #26 Posted November 29, 2010 You said the last three years cold winters have been due to the jet stream, what I am saying is that may well be the case, but if the experts who predicted global warming did not take the jet stream and its unpredictability into account, then they failed to fully investigate the issue and should never have made such dire predictions. You also failed to account for the cold winters experienced by other countries whose weather is not driven by the jet stream to such a degree like southern Europe or the US for that matter who all experience colder then average winters over the last few years. I think you'll find that they did take the gulf stream into account, but some mainstream newspaper jumped on the sensationalist headlines without actually bothering to employ a journalist who understood the science
 Share this content via...

[Matt] Â Â 10 #30 Posted January 24, 2011 I wouldn't listen to anyone who says climate change simply means warmer weather. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but a warmer global climate can quite easily cause more snow than normal within a localised cold weather spell. This is because a warmer global climate will cause more water to evaporate into the atmosphere. In turn more moisture in the atmosphere will mean more precipitation. More precipitation will mean more snow within a localised cold weather pattern. Â We may have seen a lot of snow this winter but you should also realise that only a few days ago the World Meteorological Organisation announced 2010 as being the warmest on record globally. INTERVIEWER Â Â 10 #31 Posted January 24, 2011 It's best not to use the phrase 'global warming' anymore, as most people realise that winters in the UK are becoming very much colder. And don't question why our British summer's are virtually non-existent. Â Best to call it by the non-threatening term 'climate change', then any variation in temperature - hot or cold - can be explained away by using this bland term. This allows the Green brigade the freedom to peddle their rubbish to their heart's content...
 Share this content via...

This allows the Green brigade the freedom to peddle their rubbish to their heart's content...  Stasis is not an option for the Earth's climates.  The problem (perhaps) with talking about climate change (inevitable) is that for the past many years, we have been told that human activity is primarily responsible for the increase in CO2 levels and that increase will cause the Earth to warm up.  We certainly see more news reports of extreme weather than we did 60 years ago ... but then again, we have rather more TV sets than people had 60 years ago and rather more reporters out there filming the weather.  We have been told that "if the temperature increases by n degrees (where n is a very small number) there will be a temperature runaway".  Climatological records do not go back very far, but we do know that when the Romans were manning theirforts along Hadiran's wall, they were drinking wine made from grapes they grew in the vineyards up there.  Do the Northumbrian vineyards produce many good vintages nowadays?  If it was warm enough to grow grapes outside in Northumberland, then it was warmer at that time than it is now.  If the primary cause of global warming is human activity, where were all the factories spewing out all the Carbon Dioxide? They must've been heavily automated, because there were hardly any people on the planet (compared to today's figures.)  I can hear the argument already: "Aaah! But you're looking a a localised climate!"  Really? If the climate at 55'N 002'W was warmer then than it was now, where were all the colder regions at that latitude? Greybeard   10 #36 Posted January 24, 2011 The current inter-glacial climate probably has some way to go before it flips. During the last one, known as the 'Ipswichian' Hippos, Rhinoceros, Lion, Hyena and Monkey roamed parts the British Isles.  http://www.essexwt.org.uk/geology/geology4.htm  I wouldn't mind it that warm at all, at least my heating bill would be affordable.  All you snow-lovers be careful what you wish for.
