  1. Appreciate this thread is now six years old, but if anyone still needs the names in the 'Roll of Honour' for the victims of the raid, it can be found here - http://www.brigantian.force9.co.uk/roh.html and more info about the raid here - http://www.chrishobbs.com/sheffieldsfirstraid1916.htm
  2. No evidence of course, - you have evidence that it won't happen ? Political smears....political sneers; not much difference in my book, all is fair in love, war and politics. Where in your esteem would Nick Clegg be now if he had formed a coalition with the Labour party ?
  3. Yes - a golden opportunity for anonymous labour agitators to create a bit of mayhem knowing full well the LibDems will get the blame. Very handy ammunition for the local elections.
  4. Why would a committed Labour man feel aggrieved about the LibDem wholesale betrayal of their supporters ?
  5. You keep blaming the Bankers but who was it had the power to regulate the banking industry but just couldn't be bothered ? - not the last Labour govt. surely ? 13 years of lost opportunity by a bunch of numpties who got into power on a ticket of making life better for everybody but instead managed to make it a whole lot worse. And the current bunch of numpties have no stomach for taking on the Bankers either, it matters not the colour of their rosettes, UK politicians are just a bunch of gutless whimps.
  6. Pretty much as Lostrider describes it. Brearley gives a full account in his autobiography Knotted String :Autobiography of A Steel-maker 2 copies available at Central Library.
  7. Do the fairies now it's you bakes them cakes ?
  8. In opposition the Tories were dead set against this. Now there are all sorts of rumours circulating....eg burger joints will have to change their exterior decor to look like fitness clubs.
  9. I have to wonder if the Council didn't 'volunteer' Sheffield as a venue. It would seem pretty stupid though given the local antipathy towards Nick Clegg....or perhaps the LibDems on the Council still see him as the boy wonder.
  10. It would seem lots of Sheffield's councillors, whatever political affiliation they wear in their buttonhole, are rabid Tories at heart. They just cannot stomach the idea of all that land sitting there purely for the pleasure of the population and not generating any income. Looks like we need another trip to the Charity Commissioners.
  11. Ah - you mean they put the thumb-screws on them I did read this will be the last paper census. Sometime between 2015 and 2021 we shall all have a tiny digital implant fitted that will extract all the required info directly from our brains.
  12. The council had the agreement of the last govt. for this PFI scheme. In fact I thought it had been approved and the tendering process was in progress. If this falls through I can see Nick Clegg being drummed out of Sheffield for good.
  13. They usually have to unless they want to become a pariah in their own party. The party pays their election expenses and they are expected to repay the party by toeing the party line. Politics is a dirty game, little to do with representing the people who vote for you but much to do with enforcing dogma.
  14. Yes that's what he said...he didn't say 'Barnsley folk are narrow minded racists' as stated by the OP. I would say it was a fair conclusion given all the things Barnsley folk are alleged to have said to him.
  15. You should apply for William Hague's job....he obviously hasn't got a clue
  16. Why do you feel the need to makes things up ? Nowhere in that DM article do those words appear.
  17. And who will be staffing these 'agencies' ? Probably the same or similar idiots to the ones who signed off the schools/hospitals PFI contracts. Or the contract for those two shiny new aircraft carriers and the Eurofighter. Tony is just pointing out what is already almost a fait accompli....the wholesale privatisation of public services. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/8337239/How-we-will-release-the-grip-of-state-control.html The sub-text of course is how public service can be made to generate private profit.
  18. And equally ridiculous predictions "we'll be able to look back on this by-election as the point from which we built all the way up to our success in the 2015 general election."
  19. Is it OK to judge Americans b the way the US govt. behaves ?? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/04/bradley-manning-sleep-naked-wikileaks
  20. Extra St. John's Ambulance people drafted in, possibility of flying shoes...and that's inside the City Hall. I do hope there's no blood, - well perhaps a bloody nose for Cleggy, but that's all.
  21. Well what a fuss...and over an entirely predictable result that hasn't changed anything. LibDem conference next week should be entertaining.
  22. We had a Goldfinch convention in the garden this afternoon, - at least twenty of them all jabbering away to each other. They cleared the bird table and almost emptied the seed feeder; like a swarm of locusts
