I expect that as usual our commercial interests in Libya will override any official expression of outrage or sanction of Colonel Gaddafi's conduct. Corporate profits always trump moral rectitude.

Greybeard replied to Bethsmummy's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Well that's 7 inches in 40 minutes. Pretty spectacular...unless someone's telling porkies http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=7304067&postcount=3899 I think the lad in the sharp suit on the BBC just now mentioned more snow on Monday ? -

Our 2cm at 0630 is now almost 2 inches and it's still coming down steadily. Radar suggests at least another hour of snow here. -

Alcohol consumption in the UK has been dropping since 2002
Greybeard replied to Nagel's topic in General Discussions
It seems odd then that alcohol-related liver disease in young people up 50% in a decade. Perhaps there should be a special additional tax on the drinks industry to pay for the treatment of the thousands of people suffering from alcohol-related liver disease. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8281045/Alcohol-related-liver-disease-in-young-people-up-50-in-a-decade.html -
Caravan Man the bullies are at it again
Greybeard replied to cuttsie's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
The one at the bottom of Sharrow lane.He was awarded Goose Green at the enclosure of common land, but lost it again when Abbeydale road was built. -
Caroline Spelman isn't out of the woods though. She will still be expected to make savings of £200million+ in her department, if she can't axe the forests I wonder what will be lined up for the chop. Nor do I believe the scheme has been dropped, - just put on the back burner until a more appropriate time or Spelman is replaced.

Caravan Man the bullies are at it again
Greybeard replied to cuttsie's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Indeed. Goose Green was stolen by the man who owned Mount Pleasant; he incorporated it into his garden. -
Right - "Health and Efficiency" it was, sadly i never got to see the inside pages I seem to remember another shop opposite the Royal that sold and repaired radios, a man by the name of Goodison ?
-
In the early 50s the paper shop on Abbeydale road was run by a Mr. Turner and in the late 50s the one on London road near Highfield place was run by the Connors. There was another paper shop on Abbeydale road near the junction with Herschell road which used to keep a copy of 'Health and Beauty' magazine in the window

Care of the elderly - the NHS problem that won't go away
Greybeard replied to Greybeard's topic in General Discussions
That is what the report is specifically about, - the treatment of elderly patients in our hospitals; not the general care of, or concern for the elderly in the wider community. -
Yet another report about the shameful neglect of the elderly in NHS hospitals. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8324569/NHS-shamed-over-callous-treatment-of-elderly.html OK, so lots of us old folk go into hospital to die; but do we have to do it caked in our own excrement, starved and dehydrated, often in terrible pain, whilst those who do care for us are kept away in case they notice how we're being treated ? Perhaps there is a job here for all those Big Society volunteers ?

Cameron seems to be more interested in High Society than Big Society - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1356469/Cash-internships-Tory-backers-pay-2k-time-buy-children-work-experience.html

Portent of things to come (politically speaking)
Greybeard replied to max's topic in General Discussions
Political portents make me laugh. The House of Commons have today voted to reject the ECHR attempt to lay down the law in this country; but legal opinion seems to believe that our parliament just can't do that because some political numpty has surrendered our right to make our own laws. And people here are sticking pins in each other over a little local election in Bassetlaw with a 32% turnout. -

Global warming is a reality, as is global cooling. Cyclical freeze and thaw....during the last big thaw before the current one the graph shows that temperatures were hotter than they are now, - and that can't be blamed on human activity. We do need alternative forms of energy but the crooks who control policy won't let that happen while there is still so much money to be made out of oil and gas etc.
-
This graph suggests that the peak temperature in each of the last four inter-glacial periods have all been higher than global temperatures are now.

Disgusting behaviour by Labour MPs in the House of Commons
Greybeard replied to espadrille's topic in General Discussions
Because the majority of them are overpaid, under-worked, puerile idiots with little or no real-life experience. The nodding donkeys on the front benches are even worse and it's hardly surprising the state the country is in. Time for a bloody revolution I think, with a guillotine set up on Westminster Bridge so the heads drop straight into the river. -
Shouldn't that be bruin your own bear ?

State multiculturalism has failed, says David Cameron
Greybeard replied to ricgem2002's topic in General Discussions
Your usual point avoidance tactic. It's the numbers of of people 'not born here' that is the concern...not where they worship. And it was the outgoing Labour govt. who instigated the current immigration control measures, in response to public concern and the hope of getting re-elected. Nothing to do with Cameron. -
State multiculturalism has failed, says David Cameron
Greybeard replied to ricgem2002's topic in General Discussions
It's of much greater concern in UK than in other counties apparently. "The survey found 59% of Britons agreed there were "too many" people living in the country who were not born here, also a much higher figure than the other nations. And seven out of 10 (70%) said the Government was doing a poor job in managing immigration. " http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/britons-have-greater-fear-of-immigration-2204068.html And are you branding people who have concerns about immigration as 'abnormal' ? -

Greybeard replied to ricgem2002's topic in General Discussions
Cameron wants ethnic minorities to "embrace British values". What ? Every man for himself and devil take the hindmost.
