  1. At the present time no, I would not want to live there. However, if they had pulled the whole thing down and replaced it with some low cost affordable housing I might have been interested.
  2. I suspect a large part of that crowd might be Chesterfield residents not used to having major concerts in their town. It's like a friend of mine who insisted on seeing Elton John play at Colchester United's football ground even though he isn't an Elton John fan. For him it was the novelty of having such a major name playing his home town more then anything else. ---------- Post added 24-01-2014 at 17:07 ---------- I suspect that the Beer Parlour and the Derby Tup will do well out of a Tom Jones concert.
  3. That's more of a concern in terms of big acts being lured away from Sheffield then the Proact Stadium IMHO.
  4. Sheffield also has other venues such as the City Hall and the Arena. I think part of the attraction is the the Proact is a new venue and the likes of Elton John might not have played in Chesterfield before. Plus, in a small town like Chesterfield it's a bigger deal when a big name act such as Elton John plays there.

  6. I haven't checked for a while, but the largest Tesco's might have Sarsparilla cordial.
  7. I've just replied to a thread on here entitled "unfunny comedians" mentioning Russell Brand as it happens! (he really is over-rated) There are left wing troll "social commentators" but there are far more from the right wing of politics such as Richard Littlejohn and James Delingpole. So much so in fact that I think it might even be unfair to single out Katie Hopkins, as bad as she is.
  8. Russell Brand Ricky Gervais Keith Lemon Jim Davidson Noel Fielding Not a fan of Frankie Boyle either.
  9. I agree with that. There are a few "talking heads" like her who are more interested in being shocking and shrill for attention then contributing anything useful. The idea that Katie Hopkins should be banned from the media is not a good one. Ignore the likes of Hopkins and Delingpole and they'll go away anyway.
  10. Yes, Beer Central is certainly worth a look. I've got to admit though, that I may have been distracted by some of the other beers in there, especially those from the likes of Kernel and Bristol Beer factory.
  11. I'm waiting to see if they are on the ballot paper for the European elections this year. Even though they are not really set up for the voting system in European elections where you vote for a list of candidates from a party.
  12. Certainly agree about UKIP doing well. However much I disagree with them and dislike them it's European Parliament elections this year, and until the EU sorts itself out UKIP will continue to perform very strongly at those elections. Also agree about lots of hot air, smoke & mirrors and little chainging politically. Don't know if the economy will improve but we can only hope that it does for everybody's sake.
  13. Still doesn't excuse what Stalin did.... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/vladimir-putin-soviet-leader-joseph-stalin-was-no-worse-than-oliver-cromwell-9016836.html
  14. Visited the New York Tavern on Saturday. The first thing to say is that it's very cheap. Chantry New York Pale at £2.00 a pint! Much better then any other Rotherham pub I've been in, although I must admit that it could be more welcoming.
  15. Strangely enough, I think I have seen Toolmakers beers in the White Swan! I do enjoy that pub. Chesterfield Alehouse is big on local ales so it would not surprise me at all to see Toolmakers in there at some point. When I went in there seemed to be 2 kinds of customers, those who recognised me and those who I recognised! The Chesterfield Arms is well worth a visit as well.
  16. So we are now discussing whether or not the "Rotten Borough's" system we had before 1832 counts as democracy! Given how horribly deficent that system was I would have to say that it didn't make the democratic grade. And as bad as today's politicans are, I don't think they are as bad as pre Great Reform Bill politicians such as Lord North, Henry Addington and The Duke of Wellington (our greatest military leader but one of our worst prime ministers).
  17. It took a very long time after that before the whole population was eligible to vote regardless of how much property you owned, your religion and so forth so I would say some point well after that. The Great Reform Act of 1832 at the earliest.
  18. One nice thing about the British constitution is that it has evolved. Britain has become a democracy slowly, with a number of acts of parliament such as the Great Reform Act of 1832 slowly increasing the number of people who can vote. My great concern is that with fewer people voting and politicans becoming more detached, we may be about to see demoracy being slowly eroded, with the weakest groups in society slowly disenfranchised by the rich and pwerful.
  19. It's not the quantity of legislation that matters, but the quality of legislation. No country will benefit from swathes of bad laws being passed. I don't think either the current or the previous government have passed laws of sufficent quality. In my work life, I have not found petty point scoring to be as prevelent in any places I have worked as it is in politics. I do think it's more prevalent in politics then in other walks of life.
  20. I'm very much of the opinion that more of the work ought to be done in the House of Commons, and that MP's should be given more power to do this job accordingly. Too much power is with the executive branch of government at present. Currently too much time is spent "point scoring" in the Commons rather then scrutinising legislation. That might be more boring, and provide less copy for parliamentary sketchwriters but it might also result in much better legislation being passed.
  21. Even though I'm not a big fan of Boris Johnson's politics, I think he's a million times better then Katie Hopkins. She is a professional troll, but that appears to be what our media want rather then calm appraisal of the facts. James Delingpole is another one on similar lines. To be honest, click-bait from people like Hopkins and Delingpole can be so extreme and at times repulsive that they are more likely to drive people towards the left wing of politics.
  22. Well UKIP had Ashley Mote and Tom Wise in the European Parliament! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6975627.stm http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/6545334/Disgraced-ex-Ukip-MEP-Tom-Wise-jailed-for-two-years-for-expenses-fraud.html Thanks to the EU's many problems, and the closed list voting system for EU elections, UKIP has been able to get a number of MEP's elected. And a few of these have been real stinkers.
  23. I might suggest "Animal Farm" by George Orwell as a recomended book here.
