New Tesco threatens business' on Abbeydale Road
scargill replied to sharrowman's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
4 Tesco's within a 1 to 1.5 mile radius of abbeydale cannot be right in terms of fair competitioin, but of course I forgot, convenience stores do not count. tesco are in a position where they are so awash with money that then can and do buy sites that they know will probably loose money for many years, just to stop a competitor getting hold of the same site. -

Why? "We thought it may be nice to have a sign erected at the start of the main Crookes Rd saying Welcome to Crookes, or such like, with maybe a mention of something for the students..Any ideas? With the amount of new accomodation being built in town and just off St Phillips road we may be soon seeing an end to students in Crookes. A deli would be great, but even the one at Broomhill struggles to pay and has to open as a restaurant in an evening as well. -

There is added tax for eating in, not sure at what rate. But i still think you will pay at least £1 in most cafes for a can or glass of coke. -

These people are not running a charity but a business that has to make profit for its owners, Choices was unprofitable that is why blockbusterr did not take it when it took many of the other choices stores. You will pay at least a £1 for a coke in most cafes, and I am sure the owners and staff at farm foods will think its great to ditch them in place of the monster that is Tesco. Get real economic forces will decide which busineses move into the area and which survive, it will not be decided on a whim. -

choices would have made a great space for a cafe, especially the upstairs space. -

again lack of trade, Choices went bust and Blockbuster took over the profitable stores. Betting is one of the fastest growing industries in the country, and Crookes does not only cater for students, probably only around 10% actually in Crookes, but many of us live here permenantly -

There was fishmonger for many years, it had a big yellow fisherman outside, sorry but it closed due to lack of trade. Its not always about what you want, but has to be eveyone wants and will use. The main issue that needs tackling is the parking, I often drive straight through and up at broomhill, why not knock down the Merlin offices and develop it as a car Park cum occasional market place for Farmers, craft and christmas markets -

I think there is pretty much everything you need and the beauty of Crookes is the retailers are mainly independants, rather than chain store central like Hillsborough. Local people should support their local traders because soon it will be too expensive to travel far to shop. -
Tesco donates 0.08 per per transaction, how very generous.

When Stilton is off it runs faster than Paula Radcliffe, and makes you run faster than Usain Bolt.
-
A point of order, are we talking coloured (Blue) stilton, or White stilton? There is a distinct difference between coloured and white.
