Wetherspoon Francis Newton?

Just make sure you go in and buy a drink and put your reg plate in, or you have the hassle of getting a PCN cancelled.

Not a free car park, as per HHR above

Then Ambulances or Taxis are the way to go.

If you don’t qualify for an ambulance, you need to think laterally.

There’s plenty of parking in Broomhill, and you could easily drive there and taxi the last mile at minimal cost.

Can't think why they didn't extend the tram up from Glossop Road to the Hallamshire hospital. Would have been very useful.

There was a very active local residents group in the area who actively opposed the tram running up Glossop Road. I know, because I lived next door to one of the organisers.

The council couldn’t, or wouldn’t stand up to them. So the tram doesn’t go to the hospital.

It would be a good idea to add the spur in now. And also to look at a way of moving via public transport, from the Hallamshire to the Northern General.

Other cities have good public transport links between hospitals. We should too.

Firstly the responsibility for the tram and any extensions lies with the Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) which was the Passenger Transport Executive (PTE), not the council.

Of course the council work with them on any proposals, but the MCA / PTE would be the scheme promoter and would own the infrastructure.

When I was at the council, I worked with the PTE on the consultation around the proposed tram extensions to Broomhill and Ranmoor.

Yes there were vociferous locals who objected to the extension, but despite that, the PTE did put in a bid to the government to fund the spur to Broomhill. The government refused and told them it didn’t offer good value for money, so they should look to buses for future mass transit needs, as they were better value, which is why the next scheme that came up was the bus rapid transit near Meadowhall.

Though at many times of the day your chances of getting a taxi to turn up is far from adequate.

Perhaps the access between the main bus stops on Glossop Rd (and Whitham Rd) and all parts of the hospitals could be improved so that more people could use the many services that stop in the area?

The 120 is very frequent and effectively functions as an extension of the tram route passing the RHH all the way to Fulwood. It’s similar on the other side with the 52 route to Crookes. There are also several other bus services.

If there ever was a tramline past the Hallamshire, people would still face the same issue of getting from the stop/platform to wherever they’re going in the Hospital. We need to make the pedestrian, wheelchair, pushchair and cycling experience better around all the S10 hospitals.

But tram expansion anywhere is pie in the sky. We can make bus services better right away if the will is there. Probably under a new government there will be more chance of this kind of thing.

So how about we use the grassy area in front of the hospital to make a small bus interchange for services in both directions? Have lifts up from it straight into corridors serving the hospital. Enable the 120 and other services from town to turn directly in from the main road and loop back on to it again and on towards Fulwood. The tiny roundabout by the Medical School does this now for some buses, but invest in a bigger and better version that all buses can use.

The RH Hospital was built more than a decade later than was originally planned and had not factored in the increase in motor traffic / size of vehicles.

Anyway you should all be using public transport or electric scooters / chariots to get you to your destinations these days, didn't you know that cars will be resigned to history soon? 🙄
