Ontarian1981 Â Â 10 #50 Posted June 18, 2018 Take a look around and see how many betting shops there are. I googled at least 4 in Fitzalan Square alone. Well, prior to 1961 they were illegal and betting was done underground. When they became legal the bookies had to pay taxes which in part went back into horse racing, increasing prize money . In other words, everybody won. It is the same with all prohibited or illegal things that people want. You make prostitution legal ( controlled areas) you cut out the pimps and the crime and get revenue, same with cannabis, legalise it and the dealers are done and crime figures drop. etc. etc. The American experiment of banning booze backfired big time in the 1920s, It created organized crime and triggered the worst depression in modern history. RootsBooster   24 #52 Posted June 19, 2018 Are there even any arguments against legalising cannabis that aren't based on falsehoods and misunderstandings?  I've never heard a single, real argument against legalising it.
 Share this content via...
Cyclone   10 #53 Posted June 19, 2018 You would get that with any argument  No you wouldn't. There are definitely valid arguments against some things. Like, say, banning immigration. There are valid arguments again. Legalising cannabis, no arguments against it that stand up to scrutiny.
 Share this content via...
Bob Arctor   11 #54 Posted June 19, 2018 (edited) You would get that with any argument  With most topics you might expect there to be some kind of evidence-based argument both for and against. Not sure that is the case here, the argument against cannabis seems to just be variants of "because drugs are bad"*   * Except the prescribed kind that make lots of money for pharmaceutical companies of course, like anti depressants that can exacerbate your suicidal thoughts, like Sertraline. Those are good drugs, obviously. Edited June 19, 2018 by Bob Arctor
 Share this content via...
Annie Bynnol   614 #55 Posted June 19, 2018 No you wouldn't. There are definitely valid arguments against some things. Like, say, banning immigration. There are valid arguments again. Legalising cannabis, no arguments against it that stand up to scrutiny.  There is no consistency in what is meant by 'legalizing cannabis'. There is even less consistency in how the legal drug would be managed as even the pro-legalization views are divided by how it would be controlled. The last attempt at a change in legislation caused confusion and was repealed, as has also happened in other counties.  There appears to be an assumption that a change in legislation would solve everything, partly based very selective evidence from abroad. Cannabis use in the UK is significantly different to other countries.  The image of a relaxing spliff after work is far from the reality for far too many. The impact of increased availability has also not been explored fully. Until a draft Bill is before Parliament which takes into account the costs and health implications to society based on proper data and research, I will not support any changes to the current law. geared   321 #57 Posted June 19, 2018 There is no consistency in what is meant by 'legalizing cannabis'  In the states it seems that a period of first legalising for Medical use proceeds allowing recreational use.  Cannabis use in the UK is significantly different to other countries.  There might also need to be some control put on the strength, or at least greater tax put on greater strength.  Much the same way we do with Alcohol really. Cheap, high-strength booze is a real problem in some areas.
 Share this content via...
Anna B Â Â 1,417 #58 Posted June 19, 2018 The irony of all this is that Conservative MP Victoria Atkins, who opposes cannabis use and is in charge of Conservative drugs policy, has a husband with a 45 acre cannabis farm, who grows it for export all over the world. Anna B Â Â 1,417 #60 Posted June 19, 2018 I object because she is the Drugs minister, the go to person to get medicinal cannabis oil legalised. She is the one preventing it.
